Chris Farlowe & The Norman Beaker Band live - those who bought LONESOME ROAD, the concert album by the same combination, might be forgiven if they think they can give this new road document a miss.
Do yourself a favour and invest: Chris is in exceptionally fine voice, the band and the old r&b master have a much better rapport here, singing and playing their collective backsides off, and the set list is immaculate. Of course, Farlowe could never leave the stage without "Stormy Monday" and "Out Of Time", and the versions here are not just a case of going through the motions, they're heartfelt.
But there's more: Marriott-Lane's "All Or Nothing" is still a perfect vehicle for the Islington Bobby Bland version, Tony Joe White's "The Guitar Don't Lie" shows off Chris's vocal brilliance as well as Beaker's immense axe skills. Lenni on saxophone and Paul Burgess (ex 10CC) on drums also add to the overall excitement, ably complemented by John Price (b) and Dave Baldwin (keys)- whether they groove in ballad style during "Miss You Fever" or boogie like mad in "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed".
Recorded 2000 in Hungary and 2004 in Oldenburg/Germany, this is ample proof that decades after what's considered his "prime" in the history books, Farlowe can deliver like a seasoned youngster!

As a long term Colosseum fan, I love anything with Chris Farlowe belting out the blues - and this has it in spades. Sheer magic, and I wish I'd been there!
