Dance preserves national character. It is our dances that keep a record of what we were like at the time when the whole world was not yet dancing to the same tune, when dance was not yet created by fashion and business but was driven by the desire to find expression. This album contains works written in dance rhythm by Hungarian composers. There is programmatic music by Liszt, dances capturing moods by Dohnányi, Weiner and Bartók, vigorous dances by Kodály and Erkel and Bartók’s Dance Suite, which is the apotheosis of folk dance. The Danubia Symphony Orchestra is the youngest of the Hungarian symphonic orchestras and has gained an excellent reputation since it was established ten years ago; this is its first CD. Domonkos Héja, its Artistic Director, won first prize in Hungarian TV’s 1988 conducting competition. He is the most promising of the new generation of Hungarian conductors.
