Book Description

27 April 2006 Culture Smart!
Culture Smart! Hungary provides essential information on attitudes, beliefs and behaviour in Hungary, ensuring that you arrive at your destination aware of basic manners, common courtesies, and sensitive issues. This concise guide will tell you what to expect, how to behave, and how to establish a rapport with your hosts. This inside knowledge will enable you to steer clear of embarrassing gaffes and mistakes, feel confident in unfamiliar situations, and develop trust, friendships, and successful business relationships. Culture Smart! provides rare insights, and practical guidance, into cultures. The values, behaviour and customs of peoples have been formed over centuries which is why the unique information in our (or these or Culture Smart! ?) guides do not date in the same way as most (or standard ?) travel guides. Culture Smart! enables you to step into a world untouched by other guidebooks.

More About the Author

I am a British journalist and translator, born in Ealing in 1944, and resident in Hungary since 1977. I have a son and a daughter and three grandchildren. In my opinion the red wines of the Villányi region are the best in the world. I find today's young people more intelligent and wise and broader minded than we were, but less subservient, so it's best not to yell at them. I think the perfect weapon against authoritarian governments is derision.

5.0 out of 5 stars good value 7 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Bought this for a friend so I can't comment on it myself, apart from the fact that it is a handy size for travelling. My friend wanted to find out more about Hungary and was very pleased with the book, so it must be a useful guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good insights 1 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Hungary is so different in many ways and culturally I find it difficult to understand why many things do not translate to english or western culture. So this book provided many good insights into the history, culture, language and food, making for a more enjoyable experience with the inlaws. Much better insight than the lonely planet guidebook on this occasion, but the lonely planet is doing something else... A good read if you have Hungarian friends or plan to spend some time in Hungary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hungarian Culture 2 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
An enjoyable read and now feel ready to learn more about the culture and customs and maybe one day go for a long visit. One thing I did find a little annoying was the american spelling - the author is an ex pat Brit. Worth buying.

The State Department profile probably has as much information available online for free. Still, this guide does give some personal insight into the country and its people.

This is a book of facts and not so much stories with culture. It is great as a reference if you are writing a paper for school.
