5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing!, 7 Nov 2008
By Lila (London) - See all my reviews
This glorious disc was inspired by an equally glorious novel, Hungarian Dances by Jessica Duchen. What a fantastic idea! I loved the book, now I love the CD and the two complement each other perfectly. This unique pairing will be top of my list for Christmas presents this year.

The concept of 'twinning' a book and a CD is so exciting and innovative that I hope this one, though it's the first, won't be the last. And it really is a first, because the other CDs I've heard that tie to books have been compilation albums of mainly pre-existing tracks thrown together by record companies for the purpose. Graffin's disc is totally original, and it's a marvel in its own right. It will be enjoyed equally by music fans who haven't seen the book (though perhaps after hearing this, they will want to read it!).

The CD has exactly the atmosphere of the book, and it is amazing to read about pieces like Bartok's Romanian Dances and Violin Duos, Monti's Csardas and Brahms's Hungarian Dances while you are physically listening to them. Also, one of the book's characters is a fictional French composer whose music is crucial to the story, and the CD offers not only pieces by French composers Debussy and Arthur Hartmann which might resemble works by "Marc Duplessis", but a stunningly poetic work by Dohnanyi, the 'Andante rubato alla zingaresca', which seems to have been a model for how Duplessis's lost concerto might have sounded.

Philippe Graffin's tone is so gorgeous that it can take your breath away with one bow; his playing is incredibly rich and imaginative in terms of colour, nuance and daring; and the glittering of the piano-lutheal (invented by Ravel to make the concert grand sound like a cimbalom) adds another exciting dimension to some of the Gypsy-style works. Claire Desert is a perfect partner at the piano and there are fine guest contributions by some string-playing friends, especially Tom Eisner who joins Graffin in the Bartok Duos.

Give yourself a treat and get the book and the CD together.
