DVD Description

At first glance, Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane, The Punisher) seems like an ordinary divorced dad who’s trying to make ends meet. But Ray’s got one extraordinary, God-given gift. Call it his “winning tool” that sets him apart from other underpaid high-school teachers. With a little help from an unlikely business ally named Tanya (Jane Adams, Happiness), Ray is about to hatch an inspired plan to ride his winning tool all the way to a more productive, debt-free life.

I'll admit I am a fan of Tom Jane, and just wanted to see him get his kit off! However, what I found is a talented cast with an interesting and funny storyline which unfolds into a brilliant show. I think Tom Jane is pretty good to watch in films, he does the dark, brooding type very well, and in this he is Ray Drecker, the high school jock divorced from the high school cheerleader (Anne Heche) with a burnt-out house which is the least of his problems. He decides to team up with the dappy yet lovable Tanya (Jane Adams) to promote his "Happiness Consultant" business, using his biggest asset!

I must admit, I thought this was a brilliant idea for a show and I really did enjoy the first half of the season, particular Jane Adams as Tanya, his loyal and caring pimp! She is superb! However, I am not a fan of the conniving and back-stabbing Lenore (Rebecca Creskoff), granted she is superbly played however, I didn't like the direction of the plot and was disappointed with the finale.

Overall, an enjoyable first season with Tom Jane in the lead, and Jane Adams supporting, I think most will enjoy the refreshing comedy and naughty bits!

Surprising and funny 29 Jun 2010
Format:DVD
If only TV like this would happen in the UK! Perhaps the next step after the Sex and the City years, this show looks at the life and times of a male prostitute who, so far, serves female clients. The hapless but slowly learning pimp, a female friend, and the shark-like Lenor advise, control, find clients and support him. Other story opportunities arise with his ex-wife and teenage kids. Indeed, the subject being what it is, all efforts are made in the pilot to establish sympathy with a 38 year old man who turns to escort work to make ends meet. His house burns down. His childhood sweetheart wife has moved in with a wealthy dermatologist. His children are spectacularly ugly weirdos. His teaching job is due to be cut in the poor economic climate - so you do sympathise.

Funny how long it has taken for US television to get round to telling a story like this one. We're a long way from Happy Days and the Mary Tyler Moore show now. Yet this show rests on the precarious fantasy that there are rich women everywhere willing to pay for sex. This stretches credulity and one imagines that in season 2 the central character will be forced to expand into the gay world, where STDs and the risk of blackmail and exposure will threaten him (these do not come up in season 1). What the show is good on is the reality of sexual frustration for most women, the cluelessness of males about the ways they are being manipulated, and the comic effect of watching the sex. Naturally, the subject matter allows the writers to explore the dark side of human nature, making this a unique product in US television.

Bitter sweet 10 Jun 2011
Format:DVD
Another reviewer has summarised the plot well so you'll have an idea of what you're in for. The concept is original and interesting. Whilst the plot stretches the bounds of credibility I found it forgivable because of the quality of the acting. The lead characters are so well portrayed that empathising with them comes naturally. Their humanity sustains an interest in seeing what happens next. The humour tends to the embarrasing and cringeworthy sort which is not my preferred type but it's very watchable nonetheless.
