Product Description

CD Description

This intelligently written, catchy album is a perfect blend of up-tempo and slow acoustically layered tracks, resulting in harmonious, gorgeous songs that truly display Erin s versatility as an artist. Hundreds Of Lions was crafted over three years - an unprecedented, luxurious amount of time that allowed Erin to nurture new songs to life, and gave producer (and longtime musical partner) Sam Kassirer the freedom to produce his vision of a watershed, modern Erin McKeown album, with her voice as its centre. Sam and Erin retreated to a farmhouse studio tucked in a pocket of rural New England and experimented. They squished acoustic sounds through synthesizers. They programmed electronic squiggles to mingle with orchestral strings recorded in a country church down the street. Brass and woodwinds, traditionally last, were recorded very early on so they built the core of the record instead of just being layered on top. The result is a record fit to bookend the first ten years of a dynamic career of a unique American artist.

FAB 12 Jan 2010
By WeeHels
Format:Audio CD
I ordered this on the back of being a big Ani Dirfranco fan and Erin is on her label. Fair to say that this is the best album I have bought in a long while, a rare treat. Warm, insightful and foot-tapping all in one. Marvellous!

Nigh on impeccable 19 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
I saw Erin 8-9 years ago supporting Po Girl and she was great live. I subsequently got several of her albums - all pretty good - but then she fell off my radar. This album has been out for a couple of years but Ive only recently got hold of it. To me this is a further step up from those earlier albums.
There are 13 self-penned songs over around 40 minutes. A range of styles is covered from catchy pop through more folky numbers to swing/jazz inflected. Erin's vocals are clear / very easy to listen to & deal with moods running from more intimate to fairly skittish. There's a whole range of tempos and subject matter so no two tracks are similar. Vocals are supported by complementary instrumentation with tasteful use of strings and percussion.
The 40 minutes passes enjoyably and all you want to do is press replay.
The packaging is all card, nicely designed and contains full lyrics
I guess there's no real killer song and nothing that completely stirs the senses but this is a lovely, high quality album from a mature artist.

Erin just keeps getting better 12 Nov 2009
By C. Keyes - Published on Amazon.com

Erin brings a variety of sounds and tempos, writes lyrics that bring a smile and deepen thought, and keeps her indomitable sense of play intact. Oh yeah, she's got guitar chops, too,but lets her picking serve her song. Erin is one to watch, my friends. She is carving out her own career independent of the big record companies...sorta like Ani Difranco has done. The world doesn't need another pre-packaged pop princess, but it sure needs clever singer/songwriters like Erin McKeown. If you're new to Erin, I suggest you check out back-catalog tunes like "Born to Hum," "We Are More," "Queen of Quiet," and her wonderful, kick-drum-happy take on "Paper Moon." You're in for a treat.

Impulsive Purchase 14 Mar 2010
By Andrew G. Mathews - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I was in Borders last week and heard Erin McKeown playing on the in-store sound system. I found that I was waiting for the next track and wanting to know who the artist was. Her voice and lyrics are compelling. The Hush Sound came to mind. Purchased the CD and have been playing it in the car ever since.

$2 steal! 10 Nov 2009
By Julie - Published on Amazon.com

I love amazon's daily mp3 deals, but I was completely unfamiliar with Erin McKeown's work.

Amazon billed it as 2009 Outstanding album. Those kinds of labels always leave me highly skeptical and more than a little suspicious. But I tried the preview option.

Erin's voice is so unique and distinctive that I was immediately hooked. And this is coming from someone who literally has about 10 female artists in her 737 album collection (to give you a taste in no order: Shirley Manson of Garbage, Rosemary Clooney, Amy Winehouse, Keely Hunt, Ella Fitzgerald, the Kills/Dead Weather's Allison "VV" Mosshart, Alan Davis, Diana Krall, Shea Seger, and the Horrorpops's Patricia Day)

I know this will sound like a slam, but she has that kind of voice and style that lends itself well to an Apple commercial. Just outside of mainstream, but not so alienating that it's bad indie. Think Feist, but not as breathy. Though she sounds like she'd be great in those hole in the wall venues, the sound is also intimate enough that it could be just in the next room over, or perhaps on the ipod at your next dinner party? Have everyone look up from their plates and sheepishly ask who is that?

(Put the Fun Back in) the Funeral with its slow, slinky Latin vibe is definitely a personal favorite. All That Time You Missed's tone strikes me as Andrew Bird-like, (totally a good thing) but maybe that's just me.

For two dollars it's a steal. Give it a preview and be as pleasantly surprised as I was! Wishing Ms. Keown all the success in the world!
