I love amazon's daily mp3 deals, but I was completely unfamiliar with Erin McKeown's work.
Amazon billed it as 2009 Outstanding album. Those kinds of labels always leave me highly skeptical and more than a little suspicious. But I tried the preview option.
Erin's voice is so unique and distinctive that I was immediately hooked. And this is coming from someone who literally has about 10 female artists in her 737 album collection (to give you a taste in no order: Shirley Manson of Garbage, Rosemary Clooney, Amy Winehouse, Keely Hunt, Ella Fitzgerald, the Kills/Dead Weather's Allison "VV" Mosshart, Alan Davis, Diana Krall, Shea Seger, and the Horrorpops's Patricia Day)
I know this will sound like a slam, but she has that kind of voice and style that lends itself well to an Apple commercial. Just outside of mainstream, but not so alienating that it's bad indie. Think Feist, but not as breathy. Though she sounds like she'd be great in those hole in the wall venues, the sound is also intimate enough that it could be just in the next room over, or perhaps on the ipod at your next dinner party? Have everyone look up from their plates and sheepishly ask who is that?
(Put the Fun Back in) the Funeral with its slow, slinky Latin vibe is definitely a personal favorite. All That Time You Missed's tone strikes me as Andrew Bird-like, (totally a good thing) but maybe that's just me.
For two dollars it's a steal. Give it a preview and be as pleasantly surprised as I was! Wishing Ms. Keown all the success in the world!
