Book Description

10 Aug 2006
Ron Watts remains one of the most influential men in the
history of British music.

From John Lee Hooker to Johnny Rotten, Bowie to Bono, Ron got to know and
work with the biggest and the best. From bringing the blues greats to
Britain, to his central role in the 1976 Punk Festival at London's
legendary 100 Club, he helped shape youth culture in the UK.

With a foreword by former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, Hundred Watts is the
informative, revealing and extremely funny account of Ron's days at the
cutting edge of the music busness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Remarkable Mr Watts 14 April 2013
Format:Paperback
"A Life in Music" is an apt description for Ron Watt's memoirs; from the time the butcher's son from Slough heard Walter "Pee Wee" Hunt as a young boy he distinguished himself in music in a way nobody else has. As a promoter at the Nag's Head in High Wycombe, he worked and toured with such blues legends as Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Witherspoon, Chuck Berry and Freddie King to name a few, after starting out at places such as the Ricky Tick, promoting such artists as The Yardbirds and Graham Bond Organisation. Those who grew up listening to the Stax and Chess records imported to the UK in the 1950's were able to see these greats in person because of his efforts.
Despite promoting the blues musicians whose music largely shaped British popular music and culture in the postwar years, and artists who have become some of the biggest names in the business--Jagger, Bowie, Bolan, and countless others--Watts will always be most associated for Soho's 100 Club and a notorious band he promoted there--the Sex Pistols. Bored and frustrated by the prog-rock scene that had evolved from the late '60's, with its accompanying pomposity and tendency to bore audiences not attuned to their revelational relevance and 45-minute guitar and keyboard solos, Watts recognised in the Sex Pistols a return to the loud, fast, angry roots of rock and roll and transformed the venue that had existed since 1942 into the nerve centre of the punk scene. It was here he staged the International Punk Festival in 1976, featuring the Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Clash, Buzzcocks, Stranglers and the Damned, earning him the title "Godfather of Punk".
After the heady days of punk had waned, Watts went on to promote others who have since become household names; Bono and Howard Jones among them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Ron Watts! 16 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ron Watts played a large and important part in my late teenage early twenties years. Through him I met many great Blues performers including the awesome Howling Wolf whos music is still my all time favourite. Ron Watts has written a good book and it took me back to many a good time at The Blues Loft, Nags Head, High Wycombe. Thanks Ron, you are well remembered.

5.0 out of 5 stars I WAS THERE AT THE NAGS HEAD AND THE 100 CLUB 22 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
What a rollercoast life Ron Watts led. From the Blues , Rock and Roll to the the Punk movement Ron started it, run with it and saw the demise. If any body had a bigger influence on the youth of yesteryear tell who they were.

His story is funny ,frustrating, sad and happy but no self pity. Many times he was on his back side but he got up and started all over again.

Who Ron didnt promote just wasnt good enough.

His bands were the best his clubs were the best I KNOW I WAS THERE.

Beg borrow or steal this book you will not be dissapointed.
