This book is probably my favorite book in my collection.

Even though the material is quite dated, the games themselves are excellent for playing solitaire chess (i.e. trying to guess the next move before looking at it).

the annotations are understandible by average players as opposed to the worthless symbols encountered in more modern books.

I have found this book to be a good place to start when trying to learn a new opening. Many of the old original traps and tactics that early players fell into while opening systems were being developed and discovered are here.

The only downside is that the book contains games from about 1930 and earlier. Therefore, you will NOT find the latest theory on modern systems. But for the older classic openings this book is a real treasure trove.

This is a Dover reprint of the classic work originally published by G. Bell & Sons in two volumes during the early 1950's. The games (in fact totalling over 600) are arranged in opening classification, which presents a very good view of the evolution of opening theory. Although, every game is a classic, and all of the great players are well represented, the collection ends in the late 1930's (ie. being followed by 100 Master Games of Chess, also by Dover, and also at Amazon). All games are well annotated, and the authors are careful to preserve the right balance between simplicity and detail. The English descriptive notation used may seem a bit dated to one grown up with the modern algebraic format, however, it is refreshing to get away from the increasingly common 'Informator' style notes that read like train timetables. In short, this is a veritable treasure trove of classic chess games that will repay close study, and a lesson on how chess books should be written. In this, Dover has preserved their excellent reputation for a high quality, and value-for-money publication that should stand up to years of use.

Besides a strong grandmaster, Dr. Savielly Tartakower was also a noted chess-journalist and a leading figure of the Hypermodern School of Chess during the 1920's-30's - an age of exploration and experiment. His impressive collection of master games can be read as a treatise on the early development of opening strategies and as a tribute to the genious of the older masters. What you get for the price is unsurpassed: over 500 full games, arranged in 3 books, sorted in 33 opening categories, ranging over 150 years of pre-1930 master play - so expect a lot of Alekhin, Anderssen, Blackburne, Bogoljubow, Capablanca, Euwe, Janowski, Lasker, Marshall, Morphy, Nimzowitsch, Pillsbury, Réti, Rubinstein, Spielmann, Steinitz, Tarrasch, Tartakower, Tchigorin, Yates - with short introductions to each game by Du Mont and quality annotations by the doctor himself! This book continues to delight me, because it serves both as a reference-tool and an instructive manual, as well as some humbling lessons in chess history - in this computer-age one would easily tend to forget that there is indeed much to be learned from the older masters... Perhaps my favourite one of all, so thank you Dr. Savielly! Standard quality printing. Descriptive notation.
