Viennese-native Friedrich Stowasser (1928-2000) called himself Hundertwasser Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt. True to the colorful variety of his names, he pursued many activities as a painter, architect and ecologist, and as "one who awakens identities." This presentation of Hundertwasser's work in all of its different facets is guided by the artist's own view of himself and his purpose. And, because his work is virtually inseparable from his personal life and political activity, a vivid portrait of the artist takes shape before the reader's eyes. Excerpts from conversations between the author and the artist lend a sense of immediacy and authenticity to the narration.

Review

"His trump card is his art, the creator of beauty: of natural harmony, peace and joy. The extra-lucid power of his analytical sensitivity makes him the perfect decoder of global culture and its guided information. He reveals the prodigious quality resources of naturist empiricism against the abusive uniformity of rationalist totalitarianism, against the tyranny of ugliness and the iron rule of its straight line." Excerpt from: Pierre Restany, Hundertwasser, The Power of Art - The Painter-King with the five skins, Cologne, 1998, p. 94"

5.0 out of 5 stars Hundertwasser rocks!! 1 Nov 2007
The colours of Hundertwasser's paintings practically leap off the pages at the reader. I have several Taschen 25th Anniversary books on artists, but IMHO Harry Rand's book on Hundertwasser is the best yet! Told in English as a series of intimate interviews between Rand and the artist, it contains hundreds of colour and black&white pictures of Hundertwasser's art and of the Man himself.

I knew nothing about Hundertwasser before I bought the book, but I bought the book because the vibrant, pulsating colours of the dustcover called to me. Inside, page after page of the most beautifully coloured paintings led me into a fantasy world filled with lines, spirals, circles and always those vibrant colours. Hundertwasser has now become my favourite artist. When I feel down, all I have to do is gaze at one of his paintings and then suddenly the world is a brighter place again.

Hundertwasser rocks!

The Taschen book 'Hundertwasser' by Harry Rand is very inspiring and fascinating. It tells the story of Hundertwasser's life and work with wonderful (in many cases) full-page illustrations. The content of the book is based on lengthy interviews that Rand conducted with the artist before his death in 2000. It speaks of his many innovative and thought-provoking theories on modern life and society, which inspired his work and his rather unconventional lifestyle, at points living on his ship "Der Regentag" (the rainy day)and moving to New Zealand to live in an eco-home. The book documents his many different works in varying media, beginning with paintings, eventually moving to more architectural projects such as schools and power stations, whilst encompassing more eclectic works such as stamp editions.
It is a very worthwhile reference book to own, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Hundertwasser, but also to anybody who has an interest in art, as it a book which will no doubt leave you feeling very inspired by the life of this extraordinary man.
