Book Description

30 Nov 2001 Poster Portfolios
Friedrich Stowasser (1928, Vienna 2000, New Zealand), better known by the name of Friedrich Hundertwasser, was a painter, thinker, and architect, or rather a doctor of architecture, as he declared in his manifesto of the 24th of January 1990. His architectural creations, organic and full of imagination, may have been influenced by the works of Antoni Gaudí. Yet, Hundertwasser was more radical in his philosophy. As expressed in his remarkable eco-artistic manifestos, and other achievements (paintings, posters, stamps, houses, and architectural designs), his message remains profoundly and viscerally ecological. His pictorial work is characterised by an organic abundance of forms and by the brilliance of its colours. Hundertwasser is an artist who is difficult to classify. With his tremendous love of nature, he is one of the pioneers of humanist and environmentalist architecture, which attempted to reconcile creativity and ecology. This vision has been shared by many young artists all over the world and by the founders of eco-villages.

About the Author

Pierre Restany remains the most influential French art critic of the second half of the 20th century. A witness to the dynamic New York art scene, he founded, along with Yves Klein, the New Realism, an artistic movement created in reaction to Pop Art, which expressed the distress of the post-war period. Always alert and on the look-out for a new artistic creation, this eminent art critic became interested in Hundertwasser s fascinating work and ecological theory. They met on several occasions: in Paris in 1957, and also in Vienna, where they spent three days together. This text is an account of the encounters between two exalted giants of the artistic scene, as well as the homage of a critic to the great Austrian artist. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner of a book! 28 Aug 2001
By Mrs. H. V. Minor VINE VOICE
This is an art book to die for! Hundertwasser is a miraculous artist whose use of colour is mouthwatering and done full justice to by this publication. Harry Rand's writing is illuminated by quotations from conversations he has conducted with the painter, thus bringing the reader very close to the thinking of the artist. Explanations of paintings and the media in which they are executed add a rich dimension to the colour reproductions which, on their own, make you reluctant to put the book down! Hilary Minor, Guildford, 2001.

4.0 out of 5 stars I salute your Spirit! 21 Jun 2000
By Critic - Published on
Hundertwasser died early this year in a little town in the North of New Zealand. Eventhough I had never met the man, I felt saddened, as I had come of know of him, and his work from this book, which is a biography of sorts.
While for me, the great attraction was the beautiful quality of the reproductions which replicated the pure pure colours, the text is mostly in an interview format, and one gets to hear Hundertwasser's 'voice' - and from that his spirit. I found myself wondering at times, if it was solely his work, or his passion which made the legend of Hundertwasser. The artist has strong opinions about everything, from garden gnomes to his hatred for conventional and boring buildings. I found his concepts of 'tree tenents' (trees should live with us in apartments) and houses that should be indistinguishable from above (by growing grass roofs) fascinating. However, at the end of the day, it is his bold use of colour - vivid, vibrant, confrontational colour coupled with his enigmatic yet child-like imagery, which glows in my memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic 24 Nov 1999
By "tholomos20" - Published on
I was in an extremely bad mood, walking around with a scowl and wishing there was more to the mundaeity that was around me. And that was when I found this book. I had never come across Hundertwasser before. This book is a magical journey throughout the artists life with beautiful reproductions of his amazingly inspirational works. The strength in the book is in its layout, sequencing and the question and answer format between the author of the book and Hundertwasser himself. This book, without sounding cliqued, has changed me and I will continue to hunt for any Hundertwasser I can find. Pure Magic.

3.0 out of 5 stars found wanting 24 Mar 2004
By A Customer - Published on
This is a nice portfolio of prints of his artwork. It only covers twelve of his paintings, and one print of the poster he did of the Hundertwasser-Haus in Vienna. Although there are very few pages, they are quite large, and have beautiful colors. This is definately coffee-table sized. This portfolio contains very little. Would have liked to see more of his architecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look for the 400-page Taschen Edition for a Real Treat! 2 Jun 2013
By D Smyth - Published on
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
There are a number of Hundertwasser books out published by Taschen, but the bargain of the century is the 400-page edition "Hundertwasser (Hundertwasser - 1928-2000)" by Wieland Schmied. One of Taschen's 25th anniversary printings, this is a poor-man's copy of Volume I of Taschen's two-volume limited edition (of which only 10,000 copies were produced). Hundertwasser worked closely with Taschen on this (designing the layout himself), and the text for Volume I is by Schmied, an art historian and longtime personal friend of Hundertwasser. The book is midi size (about 8" x 10", and there are about 200 color reproductions of selected paintings, architectural works, photos of the artist, and more.(Too bad there's no discounted Volume II, which is a Catalogue Raisonné of Hundertwasser's entire painted oeuvre.)
Unfortunately, it looks like this "25" edition has recently gone out of print. I hope I'm wrong, but Taschan doesn't list it on its website anymore, only the 200-page book by Harry Rand (which I also own, and which is also very nice.) So if you like Hundertwasser, this is a book to look for now, while copies are still available.

5.0 out of 5 stars really cool art 10 Dec 1999
By A Customer - Published on
i love this book. just like that other guy, i was walking my library and i saw this really colorful book and i picked it up and was so suprised at how awesome it was. this guy is now one of my favorite artist. its strage how someone this brilliant isnt in the limemight. thats one of the reasons i like him so much, people dont a big deal out of him. one of the things i fisrt noticed was how well he can use nearly eery color and make it not irritating to the eye. that doesnt happen very often. just buy this book if you have money to blow on a great art book
