Amazon.co.uk Review

Graham Oakley'sChurch Mice have been charming young audiences for many a year now and in Humphrey Hits the Jackpot, Sampson, Humphrey, Arthur and co. are well and truly back in a bright, breezy and thoroughly modern tale.

Sampson, the mouse-loving cat, and his mouse companions are busy blackberrying in the church yard when they find a lost lottery ticket. But instead of throwing it away as he promised, Humphrey hangs on to it and when he discovers that it is the winning ticket it soon becomes obvious that friendships are about to be pushed to the limit.

Graham Oakley's traditional-style illustrations, filled with minute detail and balanced with flashes of colour, cleverly compliment this tale of greed in the high-tech world as Humphrey and his pals come to blows over money and possessions, causing chaos as the hunt for the real owner of the lottery ticket reaches its explosive conclusion.

Humphrey Hits the Jackpot is a timely addition to a range of carefully crafted and utterly timeless contemporary children's classics. (Ages 4 to 6 years) --Susan Harrison

Imagine my delight, as a collector of illustrated children's books, on finding that a new-to-me Church Mice book existed! And this does not disappoint; all the verve and humour of the first in the series is there. Difficult to precis without giving away the plot, but all the characters act exactly as you would expect... The downside is that Graham Oakley clearly intends this to be the last one in the series :-(

Humphrey, ex-schoolmouse and a leader of the Church Mice, wins the lottery (through nefarious means) and starts spending before he gets the money. Of course this leads to disaster!

This revisit to the world of the Church Mice after a long break is very well done - amazingly detailed and dreadfully funny. Anyone who's read The C.M. at Christmas will have a fair idea of the sorts of things Humphrey buys (he picks up a genuine Ming vase - made in Birmingham), and how they get him out of trouble is wonderful too.

Wonderfully funny 15 Feb 2003
Format:Paperback
In 1999 Mr Oakley finally broke the long drought and released another book about the Church Mice and Sampson. He fully recaptures the original feel of the series, full of wicked humour and clever, detailed pictures which tell a *slightly* different story to the text...

In this story Humphrey, one of the Church Mice's leaders, suddenly becomes fabulously wealthy. Being Humphrey, his greed knows no bounds and he soon heads for disaster. (Everything that he buys is wonderful, including a Ming vase -"product of Birmingham.")
