Brilliant photos of 107 species; good chapter information, 8 Sep 2008

This review is from: Hummingbirds of Colombia (Hardcover)
Basics: 2001, hardcover, 256 pages, 172 color photos of 107 species, no range maps
Simply put, this is a gorgeous book filled with 172 excellent photographs. This book is oversized (13 x 10 inches) and takes advantage of these dimensions by showing full page, large photos. Of the 153+ species of hummingbirds found in Colombia, this book features outstanding photos for 107 (70%) of them.
Nearly all photos are taken of the bird in flight. A high shutter speed made it possible to capture details of the beating wings. The hummingbirds are only part of the photographs. It's apparent the background was carefully screened to produce a more attractive photo. The flowers are featured prominently in the photos and definitely enhance the attractiveness of picture. Several of the photos have been enlarged to form a single photo across two pages when the book is laid open.
The photo of each bird is accompanied by a short paragraph that offers a couple of general, interesting notes about the bird. These paragraphs offer no descriptions or identification notes about the birds, other than passing comments. This is also true within the main body of text. This book is all about presentation of the bird's beauty and about introducing the reader to the natural history of Colombia. Both goals are accomplished and done very well.
The layout of the book is organized into five general sections which are the following: (1) Colombia from the hummingbird's view, (2) Hummingbirds Natural History, (3) Co-evolution of flowers and hummingbirds, (4) Biodiversity and conservation, and (5) Hummingbird of Colombia. This last section is a listing of all the country's hummingbirds along with a column denoting range, habitat, and status. Each section typically begins with 8-13 pages of text, followed by a series of hummingbird species that were discussed in that section. The last part of the book contains four good maps outlining various characteristics of Colombia.
This is definitely a highly attractive book. Adding to the book's luster is the photos of some species that are difficult to find in any other book, if at all. -- (written by Jack at Avian Review, September 2008)

A supurb book of Colombian hummingbirds, 20 Dec 2004
By Christopher James Clark - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hummingbirds of Colombia (Hardcover)
While the dozen or so species of hummingbirds commonly found in the U.S. are relatively well known, many people are surprised to learn that they represent a small fraction of hummingbird diversity. Colombia alone boasts over a hundred species. This book documents the species found in Colombia, showing stunning pictures of each, flying along side the plants they normally feed on. These photographs represent years of work, including pictures of a hummingbird species thought lost to science, until Mazariegos re-discovered and photographed individuals in a small population in a remote valley in southern Colombia. The quality of the photography is extraordinary, particularly when one considers the extreme conditions the author was under when he photographed many of the birds. I recommend this book to anyone who likes hummingbirds. While it is sadly out-of-print, copies can still be acquired if one looks hard enough.
