Product Description

Product Description

Brian doesn’t sell used cars. He sells quality pre-owned vehicles. Like many salesmen, he doesn't own a car but borrows various autos from the lot. After spending the night with his girlfriend, he goes outside to warm his ride and Cirrus, a garbage man slash ex-con, deserts his trash route and steals the idling BMW. Brian can’t call the law for help because his girlfriend is married to a local police detective. Rather than betray his paramour’s secret, he sets out on foot to recover the car using his own wits and resources.

Danielle Perez: "This was a fun and punchy read, where the crimes are over-the-top and the characters are likeable despite being morally bankrupt.”

Also available by Sam Stone: Ring A Ding, The Hollywood Doll, Sunset Slam

More About the Author

From August 2011, Sam Stone with friend and fellow writer Jackson Marshall:

J - Sam, your writing has clearly been influenced by writers like Elmore Leonard. What else influences the work?

S - I love cinematic crime like Hollywoodland and Confidence. Book-wise, I'm also a big fan of Erskine Caldwell. His characters are most often dirt poor and slaves to runaway libidos and greed. So on some level it's still a bit like watching the traveling salesman being seduced into bed, and then murder, in Double Indemnity. They are all pretty well damned from the start.

J - So it's more about people with complicated lives?

S - Sometimes it's simply making poor choices and other times the characters are social misfits. I can't pass an idling car without thinking it would be fun to take a joyride but it isn't such an inviting lark that I'd do it. Some people don't have that same brake and these are the characters that interest me, people who wander out on a limb.

J - While writing I've often found characters taking unexpected turns I hadn't planned on...

S - Yes, I think of a scene I wrote recently where a character started saying the exact opposite of what I needed him to say and then another character played off of this switch and righted the ship in a manner that was completely unexpected. Those are the fun moments.

J - So you aren't interested in crime fiction in the 'Columbo' sense - a murder to be solved?

S - My next project is a traditional mystery but the principal character is a free spirit and feels like she's cut from the noir fabric so I'm excited about what's developing there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and moves along nicely 5 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on the back of the previous reviews. It was a little bit removed from what I've been reading for the past while (detective thrillers) but it was a welcome change.
Car salesman gets his "temporary" BMW stolen whilst he's having an affair with the wife of a cop. Can't report the theft for obvious reasons, tries to get it back from the hardened criminal, things don't quite go as planned along the way.
As noted before, there is quite a light-hearted/humourous element running through the story-line and it moves along at a fair lick.
I only gave it 4 stars on the account of the ending, whilst ok, was a little bit flat. Overall, and given the price, I'd recommended anyone who is undecided to go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars reminded me of Jackie Brown 28 Oct 2011

This story reminded me of the Tarantino film Jackie Brown in that it was fast-paced with lots of dark humour and flawed characters chasing their tails! Made me laugh in the same way as a Tarantino movie. Not for those who like a squeaky clean hero! I'm now checking out the author's other books with interest.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thin Gruel 27 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Formulaic US pulp fiction without the gritty realism of George V Higgins or Ed McBain. I am determined to finish it but it is not a page turner and lacks the edgy quality of a "Cogan's Trade" or similar novel.

The story is juvenile in content. The proof reader is semi literate."Cue" and "Queue" both used when the other meaning was being conveyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A humdinger of a book! 15 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was a refreshing change from the cliched thrillers you sometimes get for 99p. Well written, pages that turn themselves, I felt disappointed that the story wasn't longer, as it was read in 2 days flat. The lead character Brian knows he should behave better, but can't help being human. The two baddies Cirrus and Alvin are 3 dimensional as are their 'girlfriends' .There are several strands to the story that weave together, and reminded me of a shorter version of an Armistead Maupin book with its colourful and realistic characters. Nothing like a Tarantino film as another reviewer mentioned, much better than that!

5.0 out of 5 stars 99p bargain 19 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you like a pacey thriller with likeable characters ( even the villain ) then you will enjoy this bargain of a book. If you are having a bad day then think about the poor guy in this absorbing and quite witty story- your day could be worse ! I look forward to reading more from this author.
