Charlotte Jones has created a wonderful play in Humble Boy. It is a touching, warm comedy about dysfunctional relationships - with some sharp characterisation and witty comedy.
The strength of her writing is in the deft way she weaves her themes together without bombarding the audience with too much erudition. Given that she tackles things as diverse as bee-keeping, Hamlet and astrophysics, that is a great achievement.
She has been compared to Stoppard and Ayckbourn - and that feels appropriate. She takes the best of those writers and melds them into something individual that speaks very directly to readers and audiences.
I can't wait to start rehearsals in January, it is going to be great to work on this text for 3 months.
