Review

"The real thing. This is a marvellous play: harsh and forgiving; sad, very sad; funny, very, very funny; learned and intricate but light on its feet; a poem about people, bees, and the galaxy." --John Peter, "The Sunday Times"

International Herald Tribune

By Simon Tavener TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Charlotte Jones has created a wonderful play in Humble Boy. It is a touching, warm comedy about dysfunctional relationships - with some sharp characterisation and witty comedy.

The strength of her writing is in the deft way she weaves her themes together without bombarding the audience with too much erudition. Given that she tackles things as diverse as bee-keeping, Hamlet and astrophysics, that is a great achievement.

She has been compared to Stoppard and Ayckbourn - and that feels appropriate. She takes the best of those writers and melds them into something individual that speaks very directly to readers and audiences.

I can't wait to start rehearsals in January, it is going to be great to work on this text for 3 months.

It is incredibly difficult to establish believable characters within an often surreal world whilst seamlessly merging comedy and poignancy. Charlotte Jones succeeds.

In my opinion, this isn't a hard play to read; the stage directions are clear and there is so much to gain from being able to go back and savour the writer's individual voice, slick wordplay and comic timing.

A flawless play 19 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback
Humble Boy is expertly written, extremely funny and thought provoking. Before purchasing the script, it would be advisable to watch the play first.
