Product Description

Product Description

'Vikram Seth's poems...should have an impact far beyond much noisier pieces; for when did we last see a volume in which the poet's eye is on what is objectively before him, rather than on the intricacies of his own sensibility? Seth knows (not as a tourist, but from the inside) four cultures: his native India; England; California; communist China. Here he inspects them all respectfully and eagerly, and without partisanship or facile ironies balances each of them against the others.' - Donald Davie

Within this slim volume are some of the most beautiful pieces of lyrical poetry I have ever read. The imagery is mostly simple and direct, but still with that aura of magic that the marks the best of lyric poetry. It is by turns witty, pictorial, narrative and always elegant. The language is cleverly worked informal. Whether it is the delicate mixture of pastoral imagery and social comedy of "The Tarrying Garden" or the exquisite tale-telling of "Curious Mishaps", his touch never fails him. Buy it and show to anybody who says they don't write beautiful poems anymore. Or buy it to share in his understanding of the people and cultures of India, England, China and USA. Or buy to immerse yourself in his
obvious skill with the English language. Mostly, though, buy it because it is so good.

As a Vikram Seth fan I had to buy this book, and I was not disappointed.

On the whole I prefer his novels, with "A Suitable Boy" high on the list of the best books I've ever read. But I've loved everything he's written and this is no exception.

It is filled with imagery from China, India and the States. Seth manages to capture the different essences of these places with his words, transporting the reader through the lives and situations he describes.

Don't be put off if poetry is not your thing, after all, who would have believed one could read a whole novel in verse (and love it) until Seth produced "The Golden Gate".

This little book is worth having in any Seth collection where you can dip into it from time to time.

Lyrical imagery from China, India and California! 20 May 2004
By Vivek Sharma - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Research in Jiangsu Province

The Yangtse flows on like brown tape.
The research forms take final shape,
Each figure like a laden boat
With white or madder sails afloat.

Float on, float on, O facts and facts,
Distilled compendia of past acts,
Reveal the Grand Design to me,
Flotilla of my PhD.

In this collection, Vikram Seth has poetry and imagery from China, India and America. The poetry is heartfelt and marked by Vikram Seth's penchant for using simple words to recreate truth, beauty and magic!
