Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Equipped with the latest technology and design, the PVR-8000T is a set-top box for Freeview digital terrestrial broadcast reception.

As a digital set-top box, it can receive FTA broadcasts. Outstanding stability and comfort are its built in features. The simple installation and operation, user-friendly three-dimensional OSD, highest quality audio output with Dolby Digital Audio, and advanced video clarity made for TV and VCR are all designed to enrich the viewer experience.

In addition to delivering more channels with its new highly sensitive tuner, PVR-8000T boasts the Electronic Program Guide (EPG), for even better program information on all channels, and information plate that enable subtitles and teletext for a bounty of useful information on programs and broadcast signals.

As a PVR, PVR-8000T utilizes the preloaded software functions by incorporating the hard disk drive. This allows for assorted trick play, diverse formats of recording, and recordings playback, all through the time shift recording function.

Software upgrade notices are posted periodically on the Internet homepage, and new versions can be updated through automatic software upgrade service (OAD) via BBC Engineering Channel or through software download service on HCSA (HUMAX Customer Service Area) via the built-in serial interface (RS-232C). With the latest software, viewers are always sure to enjoy endless hours of extraordinary digital broadcasts and an abundance of data.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. No question, 7 Dec 2006

Obviously, single tuner HHD s.t.b.'s are history but if you need an s.t.b. for a TV other than your main one, these 8000Ts can still be found at bargain prices, so cheap that it makes no sense just buying a stand-alone tuner.

As for the unit itself - I cannot fault it. The missing star is only absent because of the single tuner. Five stars are reserved for my next s.t.b./recorder, which will unquestionably be be the Humax 160Gb x2 tuner.

This machine is simplicity itself to operate. This comment seems to apply to all Humax's HHD s.t.b.'s.

On first plugging it in, it set itself up, tuned in all the stations and was ready to go. The TV image it provides is superb, navigating the menus and options is totally intuitive and brillaintly designed. Searching for and setting up a recording is merely a matter of opening the prog guide, highlighting your prog and hitting OK twice. If you want to record a string of progs, like the "This Life" reruns that have been on late on BBC2 Mon to Thurs, open the "search" window from the prog guide, type in "This Life" [or even just "This", though obviously you will then get all progs with "This" in their titles] and all the progs for that week will be displayed. Now just scroll down each one, hitting OK as you go and boom! you've set it to record all that week's "This Life" with 3x scroll downs and 4x OKs!

It's great being able to skip the ads. For progs with ads in, you hit "pause" just before the prog begins - hold for about 4 mins. Then hit "play". You are now watching the prog 4 mins behind the actual transmission. When the first set of ads come on, either ff or hit the "skip fwd 15secs" button until you're back with the prog. Or you can just start watching from the beginning and hit "pause" then "+15 secs" at each ad intermission.

Then there's the radio. For guys like me who are able to listen to Test Match Special all day, you can set the unit to record the whole prog coming from Oz, from midnight to 8am, then listen next day as if it's coming from Lord's rather than The WACCA. No need to stay up all night listening in real time from Oz.

Boxes like this have finally made sense of watching TV. Humax make particularly good ones and I thoroughly recommend the 8000T and their other models.
