Review

If the animals on America's factory farms got together to award an Animal Nobel Peace Prize, they would surely give it to Temple Grandin. Who else has brought her combination of deep empathy and hard-headed engineering know-how to their lot? "Humane Livestock Handling" will make that know-how more widely available, and few things could do more to improve the lot of these animals. -Michael Pollan

Product Description

Temple Grandin, one of the most influential advocate of humane livestock treatment, has spent her life developing stress-free facility designs and standards of humane management. In an environment of growing concern regarding large factory farming practices, Grandin is a voice of reason explaining the benefits of keeping animals calm through every phase of their lives - benefits that include safer working conditions, higher yields of marketable meat, better-quality meat, and, of course, more humane conditions for the animals. The first half of "Humane Livestock Handling" reviews the natural behaviour and temperament of cattle. Working with the animals' natural instincts, Grandin describes low-stress methods for moving cattle on pastures, paddocks, and feedlot pens. Slow, controlled movement reduces stress and fear, resulting in calmer, healthier cattle. They eat better, are less likely to become sick, and do not run into fences and gates, injuring themselves and bruising the meat. Calm cattle are also far less likely to injure the humans working with them. The second half of the book is packed with construction plans, diagrams and detailed designs for putting Grandin's ideas into practice. Featuring plans for everything from gate latches to chutes, corrals, and sorting pens for full-scale facilities, there are designs that can be used in both large and small operations. In fact, half of the cattle in North America are already handled in systems designed by Grandin, and the demand for humanely processed meat continues to grow. Temple Grandin's systems are quickly becoming the industry-wide standard.

I have only dipped into parts of this book, but it is the one that Temple uses for her undergraduate students in Colorado. The drawings are excellent, and everything is done with precision and clarity, just like Temple's lectures and books in general. This book was cheaper on Amazon in the UK than in the US for some reason, but I live in the UK so that was convenient.

When you read Temple Grandin's books (I have read others of hers on animals and autism), it sometimes seems like she is just stating the obvious. But in fact what her books do is explain things clearly, without any dressing or "flannel". This comes across in her public speaking and her lecture style too. She is passionate about her work, and she conveys this in written form too. Truly a remarkable woman!

Well Illustrated! 11 Sep 2008
By E. Voogd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book starts by giving the reader an excellent explanation about why livestock behave as they do and helps the reader to understand differences in breeds, temperament and type. The book then explains how to design and construct ranches, feedlots and harvest plants, for optimal handling. The illustrations are outstanding! For anyone who is planning to build, the blueprints and instructions will be very helpful. Thanks!

Humane Livestock Handling: Understanding livestock behavior and building facilities for healthier animals 14 Jan 2009
By Michael J. Canal - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is one of the best books on livestock handling to date. It has the hows and whys of livestock handling in a way that everybody can understand. It is well written and easy reading. I would highly recommend this book for anyone planning to build a cattle working facility. The plans are clear and easy to follow. These facilities are long term commitments and the plans that are outlined in this book will put someone on the right track to get it done right.

information overload 17 Feb 2010
By Leonard Dempsey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a book that should sell for much higher for those with livestocks particularlly cattle. I was looking for a book or something alluding to building a cattle corral. Well this book is information overload for my measlly (sp) quest. I enjoyed and continue to enjoy this book, I just hope my sistes does not try to steal this book since she married into a family with cattle. The information within the book provided me with answers to my questions. Over all the book is a whole lot more then just hints, tips and methods of building a cattle corral.
