Rod updates his sound (and his look) on his first album since the excellent "When We Were The New Boys". Let's start of by saying it's not as good as the old stuff, but then should we expect it to be? Stewart has been with us since at least 1970, and his position as Britain's best rock/soul vocalist is secured. Anything great he's produced since 1976 has to be considered a bonus. What you got with his 80's albums was one or two great rockers or ballads amongst the 80's "pap". Thankfully, these days he's taking a more intelligent approach - or maybe his producers are. "Human", taken with the '90's albums, "Vagabond Heart", "Spanner in the Works" and "New Boys", represents a huge move forward, and shows him growing old gracefully. What you'll hear is AOR, soul and RnB. Nothing objectionable, nothing daring, just pure slabs of that great voice over competent playing and confortable arrangements. And that great voice is always enough! Buy it, sit back and enjoy it, but if you want ground-braking stuff, look elsewhere.
