5.0 out of 5 stars first day on the job 1 Aug 2007
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Seventh audio in an eight part series featuring the eighth doctor who and his new companion, feisty northern teenager lucie miller. All these are forty five minute long episodes. Some are complete stories and others are two parters. This is one of the latter, and will be concluded in the forthcoming human resources part two.

Throughout these stories, there's been a running story. Lucie was put with the doctor by the time lords because she saw something she shouldn't have. But they blocked her memory of it. And a mysterious bounty hunter has been on her trail. Now with lucie in the clutches of those who were after her, the doctor is on his way to the rescue. But he's been warned not to interfere too much. And he might just find there's a good reason for that..

You will find this a little tricky to get into if you haven't heard any of the previous ones in the series, since it ties up a lot of plot from them. It also brings back an element of the show that hasn't been present in the new tv series, for reasons that will quickly become apparent. This is a very strong script, lucie's predicament being an interesting take on a modern aspect of life, the cast are as good as ever, especially the two leads, and it ends on one of the most fantastic cliffhangers the show has ever done! So don't read the cast list or the inlay first if you want to keep that a surprise.

There are twelve minutes worth of interviews with the cast at the end of the disc. These are a little cursory, but they have their moments.

A really great audio. Roll on part two.

After the unbelievably poor stories of 2007's main Dr Who range it is a delight for me to say that this is an absolute stormer of a story! Well, so far...

The obstreporous Lucie has been nicely assimilated into the Doctor's world when she is unceremoniously jerked straight back out of it again. She finally gets to where she wasn't supposed to go and the whole thing speeds along like a runaway train.

The supporting cast are uniformly excellent, without the big names that marred previous BBC 7 audios, and it sounds excitingly cinematic. Oftentimes I could see vast images in my head that I haven't seen in the main Big Finish range for quite a while. The direction is concise and clipped, the sound effects approachable and the lack of telepathic moments is to be applauded.

Already my odds on favourite (along with the wonderful Mark Gatiss audio play 'Invaders From Mars') to be remade as a Tennant TV story - now THAT would be something to see - I can't say how overjoyed I am to find this gem among the rocks.

You see, Big Finish CAN get it right when they want to! Perhaps it was the BBC commission that made them try harder?

All I can do now is hope that part 2 lives up to expectations...!

This is a really good story and one of my favourite audios with Paul McGann as the Doctor. It's one of my favourite Cybermen stories from Big Finish and it ends the first season with Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith as companion Lucie Miller on a high. It's a lot more sophisticated and intelligent than any other Who story I've listened to, but it's full of wit and charm and that's what makes it all the more appealing.

'Human Resources' is a two-part story that was broadcast on BBC7 from the 11-18th of February 2007. It's spread across two discs sold separately on CD. It's a shame they couldn't have put both episodes in a two-disc set as one but that's only a minor complaint.

The first disc is 60 minutes in length approx.

If you haven't been following what's been going on in these Eighth Doctor audio adventures, it's best to start with 'Blood of the Daleks - Part 1' and 'Part 2' before getting an idea of what occurs in this story.

Lucie Miller has been captured by the Head Hunter (played by Katarina Olsson). Waking up she finds herself at the offices of Hulbert Logistics where she was meant to be going for her new job before getting involved in the adventures with the Doctor. The Doctor meanwhile is in the TARDIS trying to set it in motion in order to find Lucie Miller but can't as it won't operate without her. A Time Lord appears named Straxus who gives the Doctor a Time Ring (similar to the one in
