Product Description

Product Description

In this eighth edition, authors Vander, Sherman, and Luciano continue their approach, teaching students the importance of mechanisms and regulation, so that they begin to think in terms of processes and sequences, rather than simply memorizing the information. The work presents fundamental principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduate students, regardless of academic backgrounds or fields of study. The eighth edition of "Human Physiology" has a whole new look with a significantly enhanced art program and completely new interior design. It has also been completely updated. The text in every chapter has been revised, where appropriate, for accuracy and clarity and to take account of significant contemporary research.

From the Publisher

New to the eighth edition is the Essential Study Partner CD-ROM. Designed to support and enhance the material in Human Physiology, this complete, interactive, student study tool is packed with more than 100 animations, and more than 800 learning activities, so your students get a thorough understanding of complex concepts. From quizzes to interactive diagrams, your students will find there has never been a more exciting way to study physiology. The Essential Study Partner's self-quizzing feature allows students to review each topic before moving on to the next concept. And, if a question is answered incorrectly, it will link students back to the corresponding tutorial section for further review. The ESP is packaged FREE with each copy of the eighth edition.
New Interior Design A brighter, more modern design has been incorportated into this edition to offer a more visually appealing presentation of physiology.
Enhanced Illustrations All of the illustrations in the eighth edition have been revised using a brighter color palette and a three-dimensional approach. New anatomical and illustrative figures have also been added
New! Online Learning Center The Human Physiology Online Learning Center offers both you and your students a multitude of resources. By accessing this text-specific website, you can create your own website, assign electronic quizzes to your students, review lecture outlines, access additional teaching resources, and much more. Your students can complete interactive activities, expand their knowledge with additional readings, complete practice quizzing for each chapter, and enjoy study outlines, weblinks, and clinical applications.
A new Flowchart Bookmark reinforces one of Human Physiology's premier features'-its flowcharts. It can be used by students as a quick reference to the color-coding system that is used throughout the book.
Enhanced Visual Resource Library CD-ROM contains all of the line art, in full-color, JPEG files, from the new edition of Human Physiology. You can quickly view images, and easily import them into PowerPoint or any presentation program to create your own multimedia presentations. Also included on this CD are pre-arranged, chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint presentation featuring visuals and lecture outlines. You will also find animations from the Dynamic Human CD-ROM.
The Dynamic Human CD-ROM can be packaged for free with each new copy.
Up To Date Research. A few examples of the many new inclusions are: regeneration of neurons; new theories on learning and pain; JAK kinases and receptors; antiangiogenic factors and cancer; homocysteine and blood vessels; additional roles of leptin on the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary, such as the timing of puberty; fever and neural pathways from the liver; selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs); the role of costimuli in antigen presentation and development of immune tolerance. In addition, Chapter One begins with a new section emphasizing the scope of physiology and its unique aspects in bringing together molecular and integrative biology.
Continued Effective Approach Human Physiology is continually a best-seller because of its author-pioneered unique approach. By utilizing the Mechanism and Regulation theme throughout the text, students begin to see physiology as a dynamic process of clearly defined chains of causal links instead of simply isolated events and facts.
No other human physiology text is as consistently accurate and up-to-date as Human Physiology. Clarity of descriptions remains a top priority in each revision.
Flowcharts Reinforce Concepts. Extensive color-coded flow diagrams involve breaking down the physiological processes into clear color-coded flowcharts. Light Green Boxes'show the beginning and ending of a process. Blue 'Begin' Icon'further clarify where process begins. Blue 3-D Boxes'depict events occurring inside organs and tissues. Orange Boxes'show hormonal participation and changes in their plasma concentrations.
Clear Writing Style The authors emphasize logical development of difficult but essential concepts, with an organization that builds by utilizing information and principles developed previously at each level of complexity. For example, in describing the control of arterial blood pressure, simple models are first used to lead up to the basic equation describing this control; then, virtually all the relevant material, presented earlier in relatively small figures is brought together in a summary figure, with emphasis on the fact that this final presentation'which could otherwise be formidable'really introduces no new material.

I've finally found a physiology textbook that is so easy to read, that I feel like I'm reading a magazine. I really like the layout of the book, with colourful pages and good and interesting contents(often in a question and answer based, which makes you think while you're reading as well) And yet, this book conveys the adequate information I needed for my physiology module in my first year. I'm only a first year Biology student so I'm not sure whether this is going to be useful for higher years. But for now, I'll definitely stick to this!
