Product Description

Product Description

Drawn from the five volumes of his complete short stories (also published by Gollancz) this volume represents the very cream of Philip K. Dick's output. It serves both as a celebration of his work, in the 25th year since his death, and as the ideal introduction to his unique take on the world for new readers. As our culture becomes ever more fluid, as fact is fictionalised, as documentary gives way to reality-TV, as our identities are digitised, as globalism runs wild, as drugs become ever more ubiquitous the world is finally catching up with even the most bizarre of Philip K. Dick's imaginings. 25 years after his death we are living in Philip K. Dick's world, this new authoratitive collection of his best short fiction shows us why.

About the Author

Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was born in Chicago but lived in California for most of his life. He went to college at Berkeley for a year, ran a record store and had his own classical-music show on a local radio station. He published his first short story, 'Beyond Lies the Wub' in 1952. Among his many fine novels are The Man in the High Castle, Time Out of Joint, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight!, 2 Jun 2011
This review is from: Human Is?: A Philip K. Dick Reader (Gollancz S.F.) (Paperback)
I am writing this review in response to the previous one.

This book contains 20 short stories.
The 2 best collections (according to Lawrence Sutin, author of 'Divine Invasions') are "The Best of Philip K Dick" And "The Golden Man", which are both out of print. Sutin's book rates the Golden Man as 8/10 and The Best of PKD as 10/10.

Human Is, contains 13 selection from "The Best of PKD" and 2 selections from "The Golden Man".

Human Is also contains The Novella 'The Variable Man' and 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.' (Total Recall)

Human Is, also contains, according to many, PKD's best short story, 'The Electric Ant'

In summation, 'Human Is' contains 20 classic stories and if you are a PKD fan it is a great purchase. I am sure Lawrence Sutin would rate it 10/10.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better at Novels, 22 Feb 2011

R. Harper (Dunstable, Bed's United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Human Is?: A Philip K. Dick Reader (Gollancz S.F.) (Paperback)
I like Philip K. Dick novels and he is one of my preferred authors but it appears that short stories are not his forte.
There are possibly 2 good stories from the 20 here. The rest are below par and probably would not be published from any lesser author.
