Book Description

31 Mar 2009
The concept of Darwinian medicine is not a new one. Yet until recently there has been little interest in how this might be applied to diet and nutrition.

The relationships between modern diet, modern disease and obesity are astonishing. Our most prevalent and devastating diseases are affected by what we eat, and the basis of effective treatment and prevention can be found in the diets of our Palaeolithic ancestors.

In Human Evolution, Diet and Health, Mark Hines examines the relationships in exquisite detail, showing again and again how modern diets can have harmful consequences for the human body. In this antagonism between our genotype and its environment, disease and obesity are not only more likely, but are practically foregone conclusions. The resolution of this conflict, we find, begins with the understanding of our pasts. Humankind's cradle in Palaeolithic Africa was where our genotype evolved, and the modern world is where it must now survive. The findings of this book have far-reaching implications for our future health, well-being, and medicine.

Product Description

From the Publisher

Human Evolution, Diet and Health is an informative text, rather than a prescriptive one. It has been written in the style of a popular science book, with the intention of promoting a deeper understanding of how the body works, how it has evolved, and how it deals with the various foods that we eat. Having read the book, the reader should not simply have an improved perspective of which foods might be considered good or bad, but they should have a good working knowledge of why the body responds to particular types of foods in the way that it does.

About the Author

Mark Hines is an Exercise and Human Physiologist, based in London, England. He writes and teaches private courses on exercise, nutrition and the palaeolithic diet, and has written a number of books and articles on related subjects for a wide variety of readers. In his spare time he competes in the most arduous ultra-endurance adventure races in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought! 19 July 2009
By Mas
Format:Paperback
This book is full of thought provoking historical and factual information. It offers the reader an opportunity to gain a wealth of knowledge relating to the diet and lifestyle of human beings and how this relates to modern day situations, conditions and diseases.

I found the book easy to read from cover to cover as well as being useful to dip into whilst considering improvements to my own diet. Personally, this book has been worth every penny and more, as since spending much time considering its content and researching some questions arising from it, then making changes to my own diet, my quality of life has changed considerably for the better.

I would highly recommend this book, not to be taken literally, but to provoke thought and consideration to the effects of modern day life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful book 8 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is both enthralling and informative. Mark starts right at the beginning (literally) providing background information and setting the scene before cleverly allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions by contrasting the modern day diet. Mark addresses some traditionally controversial topics of health with absolute transparency and by providing reliable references - all with the sole intention of educating his reader.

After having read the book from start to finish initially I realised, due to the sheer wealth of functional information, that it will become more of an ongoing reference guide to improving my diet generally. At the back of the book can be found the glossary & index; particularly useful tools for a book of such depth!

This is an enlightening book which will greatly benefit those who are prepared to boldly take the next step in understanding the science behind & surrounding nutrition.

As a personal Trainer who delves into the world of controversy with regards to the controversial topic of ''diet'' and what to do or what not to do, I must say Mark Hines's reasoning are historic and unquestionable in regards to the way humans evolved and survived. When the Facts are stated so clearly, you just cannot argue against such reasoning. People will find every other way possible for a quick fix, but as time will tell, its nature's way, the only way, in which we are designed to strive for maximal health should one exist. As an avid reader of natural eating in which some call paleo or the `'cave man diet''. I believe this creates the right environment in which to thrive. Consequently, I recommend this to all my clients to understand the ideas, philosophy and anti-hegemonic thinking that underlies this long term eating plan. If you ever look at cultures separated from the modern world that are lean, strong, powerful and healthy then you cannot hide from the truth. Judge for yourselves buy this book and see for yourself. Be warned you will be different. Be better than the rest, be HEALHTY.
