Why esp aren't bigger than they are I'll never know. After Two superb albums finally the boys have got a deal and are back with this superb new e.p. Standout tracks for me are stupid mistake and Everybody wants. All six tracks are superb though, cold world is incredibly catchy and should be a single. If you liked the american adventure or holes in the wall you will not be disapointed, tom and alex's vocals get better and better. bring on a new full album in 2006!

This EP has been eagerly awaited (by me at least) and is no disapointment.
A Beating Heart is an astonishing song. It starts as a mantra-like drone over a percussive drumbeat obviously replicating a heartbeat then breaks into frantic guitar and keyboards. The lyrics seems to be about the human need for power.
Cold World is a flawless diamond of a tune with Strokes-like guitar licks and a well plonked piano.
Stupid Mistake is a lovely understated song about regret at the ending of a relationship. The guitar playing is reminiscent of the Smiths and the lyrics show a level of maturity way above ESP's previous songs.
Everybody Wants is a 7 minute epic with orchestration and whispered lyrics.
Kick In The Teeth is a great rocker with angry lyrics about the inequaltities of society.
And last but not least, So Much Love is a short but perfectly formed acoustic number with Tom and Alex singing in perfect harmony.
All in all it's a pretty good amount of music for a fiver of anybodies money. If there's any weakness, neither Tom or Alex are any great shakes as a vocalist. But as tune writers , they are the best of their generation

the human body is great. particularly mine. har de har. this EP's pretty good too. clever songwriting, lovely melodies. not a bad song. not even a mediocre one; they're all swnd, right up to the two minute acousticky closer that reminds me of elliott smith with its soft, etherial vocals and gently strummed chord progression. it's gorgeous, you only wish it was longer. (note: as soon as you get the opportunity, buy every single one of elliott smith's albums. your life will change fundamentally, and permanently. or at least, you'll get some good albums. i guess the effect is relative. whatever. do it).

anyway, i've had this album under heavy rotation for about a week now, which is much longer than usual. (a good sign). the only sticking point for me is the production, but that's more of a personal preference than a fault. they sound a little bit like feeder (not that there's anything wrong with feeder). and, if you're looking at reviews for this EP i kind of assume that you've already heard holes in the wall, and whatever pernickety fault i've found with their sound clearly hasn't put you off. so yeah. go ahead.

Buy this one just for "Kick in the Teeth" alone. great driving guitar line. Can not sit still while listening to that one.
