This is a light-hearted frothy comedy for all the family. Well, ok, maybe not for your sulky teenagers or action-seeking lads but certainly one you can watch with Granny. Aamir is an out-of-his-depth uncle unexpectedly inheriting responsibility for his three orphaned nephews and nieces plus their parents' garment factory, and Juhi is the runaway rich girl who, through a serious of mishaps (and some slapsick), ends up as their maid.
Aamir and Juhi share an effortless and endearing chemistry. The children are excellent with none of the brat favoured by Hollywood - despite their rebellions against their uncle, they all manage to remain sympathetic and likable. The villains are comedic rather than scary and while you watch Juhi and Aamir suffer a little at the hands of the wonderfully scheming woman determined to marry him, you know our heroes will triumph in the end.
As seems customary for Bollywood of this period, there are a few fairly horrible costume choices - some of the dresses Juhi wears are a time-warp from the '80s but at least Aamir never actually appears in that atrocious jacket on the cover photograph. The music is pleasant, picking up well on the emotions of the characters, and the picturisations are pretty but not spectacular.
This was never meant to be a film that stands much critical analysis and, of course, there is the odd clunky rather that funny moment, but if you just feel like some undemanding entertainment and laughter, this definitely fits the bill. It delivers both with warmth and charm.
Sound and picture quality are pretty dated and the subtitles have their moments but hey, it's comedy, so the film survives it.
