Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bombastic, guitar-flagellating pop opera, of course, but delightfully absurd all the same, Hullabaloo finds prog-inclined three-piece Muse blowing a few circuits in front of the frothing masses at Le Zenith in Paris late in 2001. Never mind what the pigeonholers say about Thom Yorke and Freddie Mercury (Matt Bellamy's most name-checked influences), given Muse's undoubted love of the great romantic composers, unfashionably deep-seated musical virtuosity and a singer who can ascend into the realms of shrieking operatic hysteria--on this scabrously unhinged version of "Micro Cuts", Matt Bellamy really does sound like Sparks' Russel Mael with his gonads wired up to the national grid--Muse are a dream amalgamation of Sparks, Motorhead's ear-boxing belligerence and Emerson Lake And Palmer's classical-is-cool ethos. And--yes, alright then--Radiohead. Or Rush for punks.

Although the non-committed need not trouble themselves (like most live records--and this is one of the better ones--it's of marginal interest to all but the hardcore fanbase), waverers may be ensnared by a second disc consisting of b-sides recorded between March 1999 and October 2001. Overall, though, one hopes that someday Muse may do a Pink Floyd at Pompeii by unleashing their psychotic Maria Callas-isms in front on an invite-only indie crowd at La Scala in Milan. Now, that would be some live album. Meanwhile, Hullabaloo, or its attendant release--the more expansive double DVD package of the same name--is a powerfully electric interlude before that difficult third album. --Kevin Maidment

Muse, in my opinion, are the best band in the world. I love listening to their albums and singles, but nothing compares to going to see them live. For those who are yet to witness the almighty Muse first hand, then this CD goes to show why you should. The opening, Deadstar, erupts with such a loud, ferocious riff that you start jumping up and down without even knowing it. Its that good. Thats enough of the live CD, the real shiner here are the B-sides. For those people who love Muse, but havent bought every single, this collection here is beautiful. Get a taste of the excellent, rocking 'Yes Please', and a bit of the alternative piano/synthesizer based 'The Gallery'. Star of the show is 'Hyper Chondriac Music'. A calmer, slower, but so much better version of hyper music, and hyper music was great in the first place.
If you cant buy the DVD, the least you could do is buy this.

Hullabaloo, apart from having a dumb title, is a great double-cd set. The first disc contains various b-sides from the last two or three years, and the second features tracks from their live performance at Le Zenith in Paris last year.

Well, let's look at Disc 1, because it features new material. It begins with Forced In, claustrophobic yet powerful. The song becomes a bit muffled towards the end and loses its greatness.
The rest of the songs are all typical Muse, with experimental sounds, great riffs and of course Matt Bellamy's top class vocals.
The real meat of this disc is the last track, Hyper Chondriac Music. This is a slow, doomed version of Hyper Music, and is even better than the original. Definitely the best of the new songs.

Disc 2 features some very good live songs, but I'm surprised some of the more favourite songs like Sunburn, New Born or Feeling Good aren't on there.
Muscle Museum is though, and it sounds great here.
There are a couple of new songs too, Dead Star and In Your World. They're great ,and'll probably follow on the next proper studio album.
If the good music wasn't enough, it is also funny to listen to how badly the bandmembers speak French.

All in all a worthy purchase for a Muse fan or general alternative rock fan. If you're new to Muse, however, I would go for the second album 'Origin Of Symmetry', which I feel is their best.

its muse live. so obviously its good. but its not just a rehash of the studio recordings, which is what tends to happen when some bands with excellent musicianship (like bellamy's) go live...it seems much more spontaneaous as if his riffs that evening (and any other) are played with genuine feeling--they become more interesting and the songs become more powerful. and he can really really sing.
buy it.
