Format:Audio CD
First, the eulogies. The Blue Aeroplanes were (and still are, as I believe they're still active somewhere) one of the most interesting and original bands of the late 80's / early 90's - like England's answer to REM, but spikier, artier and with more contemporary songs. Not really indie enough for the indie scene, but not mainstream enough to go massive, they remain, for me, one of the highlights of a five year stretch of astonishing british music from 1987 - 1992 and one of the few bands from that period that I still listen to. And they were awesome live, with a four-guitar lineup and Bez-style dancer.
They've had some half-soaked "best of's" out there before, but this compilation, therefore, really does represent the best songs from their two best albums, with proper consideration given to a song sequence that might please fans and newcomers alike ("Jacket Hangs" first, "Weightless" leading to the tremendous "...And Stones".) Quirky, poetic guitar rock at its very best.
From madness to melancholy, it's all here. And for having the balls to keep it interesting, this record deserves every one of its five stars. A "must have".

The highlights of this album are the tracks from Swagger, plus a couple of others, but is consistently strong. If Swagger (six stars!) is to remain unavailable (and I can't find it anywhere except in a second hand store in Portland, OR), then this is an essential purchase.
