A friend had loaned me his copy of Hugh Casson's Cambridge and I was sufficiently impressed to buy the other book in the series because Oxford has family connections. Reading this book is like taking a gentle stroll around the city's colleges with a good friend. Casson not only writes knowledgeably about a university he clearly loves, but he also adds to the book's readability with interesting titbits about the history of each college and about some of the characters. The bonus is the watercolour sketches that accompany each chapter. They make the text come alive and if you're new to the charms of Oxford then I recommend you order a copy. If you're a fully paid-up enthusiast with vast acres of knowledge about Oxford then I challenge you not to find something in the book that is new and fascinating.
