Hugh Baker has a degree in Chinese and a PhD based on 18 months of anthropological fieldwork in a village in Hong Kong's New Territories. From 1967 he taught Mandarin, Cantonese and Chinese Social Institutions at London University's School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), retiring in 2004 as Emeritus Professor of Chinese. He then held a post as Professor of Humanities at the Chinese University of Hong Kong until 2007. He has published widely on Hong Kong society and on Chinese kinship as well as writing language textbooks, and he has had extensive radio and television experience, notably as chief consultant to the 12-part television documentary The Heart of the Dragon. He was Chinese Language Training Advisor to the Hong Kong Government in the early 1970s.
