Hue HD USB webcam (white) with built-in mic for Windows & Mac - Skype, MSN, Yahoo, iChat

This item was delivered in the midst of postal stikes on a Saturday! I am a 'technophobe', yet found it easy to install (who wouldn't) and get up and running. The picture quality is far superior to some of the pictures we have received and I have loved using SYPE with it - the goose neck is also fantastic and having it free standing with the cable allows greater flexibility! Would highly recommend both product and seller.

This item was better than I had expected, picture is brilliant even in low lighted rooms. Good microphone too. I found this webcam to be outstanding value for money. Works well with Skype. I recommend this item to anyone

This webcam is NOT HIGH DEFINITION (despite what the name alludes to). It is a 480p webcam. It has the utterly useless feature of resizing the image to be larger, presumably with the sole purpose of being able to advertise it as capable of doing higher resolutions.

Do a simple test: change the resolution as per the user guide and capture a still. Then capture a still at 640x480 and resize it to be larger using your favourite photo editor. You will observe that the resized 480p picture is exactly as sharp - or, should I say, exactly as blurry. There is absolutely no extra detail captured in the higher resolution modes. I'm using the latest drivers off the HueHD website.

It's even mediocre at being a 480p camera. The framerate is nice and smooth if the lighting is good. However the diagonals (eg contours of the face) are rather jagged in the 640x480 mode, leaving me to wonder whether perhaps it's actually upscaling from an even lower resolution. The jaggies are very noticeable and annoying. There is a large amount of noise in the shades of the face even in bright lighting.

People who rate it high must be comparing it to other really bad webcams. Objectively the picture quality doesn't deserve any more than 3 stars, and I'm deducting one star for the misleading name and another one for misleading specs.

I bought this webcame because of the claim on the Amazon website that it was compatible with Windows 7.

When it arrived however, the system requirements on the box said Windows 2000/XP/Vista. I checked the website's support section and found that it says that Hue requires the following Microsoft Windows XP or Vista.

Nevertheless I decided to try to install the camera from the disk and the setup program promptly crashed my computer. I tried again with the disk in my other disk drive and the same thing happened. I then downloaded the drivers from the Hue website and ran the Windows 7 compatability checker which told me that the setup program needed to be run in Widows XP mode with SP2. I did so and eventually managed to get to install - but I am not yet convinced that its right as not all the menu options seem to work from the webcam software - which by the way seems to be called AMCap - not the most obvious name for the Webcam software.

I checked device manager via Windows Control Panel and the webcam seems to be set up correctly but I am not sure that its quite right as the microphone settings under sound seems to be very generic and I'm not sure the microphone is working as it should. Certainly the sound I get from it seems rather unclear - not what I would expect from a webcam of this quality.

The product looks fantastic, but my view having had it installed for a couple of days is that it was very difficult to install, the sounds is not great and the images have nothing about them to suggest they are high definition as the product info seems to claim - they seem rather ordinary to me.

Note 7 Jan 2010. I've downloaded the new software from the Hue website and it installed perfectly.

I am running XP with SP3 and have had two different webcams in recent years, the last being a Logitech E3500 - which started off OK. However, following a Windows update I kept getting error messages and the camera shut down each time. It seems there was a software conflict and in spite of multiple messages to Logitech no solution was found. I experimented with two others but either the picture or sound quality - on in one case, both, was unacceptably poor.
The Hue is well built, flexible and looks good. The software loaded in seconds and works well. I thorughly recomment this webcam.

I recently bought one of these webcams to use with a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard.
Nice design, includes microphone which works OK, but monitor screen remains blank.
I have since been told that problem is with the camera hardware, which worked OK with Leopard, but is not supported by Snow Leopard.
Returning item to vendor.

Great item. Very sexy, good picture, sounds not too bad either. Just plugged into both my Mac and my Linux (Fedora 11) laptop and it just worked! True plug and play, the way it should be.

Have had the Hue webcam installed now for 6 weeks or so. Very easy to set up with good instructions etc. Good quality sound and picture reported by recipients. Most important for a Mac user - no problems re compatibility - have bought others supposedly Mac compliant which haven't been. Recommended.
