5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FLOOD PUMP BUT TAKE NOTE! 5 Feb 2014
This Hozelock flood pump is a very powerful for such a small thing. Once in water it pumps at a fairly ferocious rate. We bought it because here in February 2014 the heavy rain just will not stop and our garden is flooding again and again. This flood water fills the soak away, floods the garden then flows down to the patio and unchecked can come in through the patio doors.

We're on a clay soil which is now saturated. The water pools in several areas of the garden and then runs on down. But with this pump in place I'm managing to pump away, at a rough estimate, around 900 - 1000 litres an hour.

The pump draws in the water from two slots in its base and then chucks it out with great force through a 32mm nozzle on the top of the base unit.

BUT TAKE NOTE: It does NOT come with a hose to carry the water away and we spent a long time and a bit of money trying to locate a suitable hose to do the job properly. Hozelock make a `lay flat' hose but this is NO GOOD. It takes too much pressure to open up the full length of the hose to work properly so don't waste your time and money. We were told by the manager at B&Q Leatherhead that we could use a regular garden hose pipe but this is totally incorrect. It won't fit and it's the wrong diameter. Thanks a bunch B&Q! THE RIGHT HOSE IS ESSENTIAL. Read on:

Instead buy a length of 1.25in (32mm) Corrugated Black Pond Flexi-hose and a good hose (or jubilee) clip. The length you need will depend on how far you want to send the water. I bought a 30m length from a supplier on Amazon.co.uk and cut it to length. This reinforced hose is the right diameter and this is essential. The amount you can pump is governed by the length, the diameter and the ground gradient. So keep the hose level and flat and send it to a drain.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good pump useless float switch 3 Aug 2011
This pump works well when it is going, problem is the float switch is too unreliable for the pump to be left to start when flooding occurs. If the float switch worked correctly it would be an excellent pump.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic piece of equipment 26 Dec 2012
    By Debbie
This year the bottom of my garden completely flooded due to factors such as next doors ashtree had been cut down, the amount of rain we have had, my house is near the bottom of the road so any excess rain water does come down my end.
A neighbour lent me his Hozelock flood pump and until a split occured in the rubber hosepipe (not a hozelock pipe), it was a dream to use. So the following day (Xmas Eve) I went to B&Q and got one for 50 + Hozelocks blue hosepipe that you need with it (15m/49ft - as my garden is long) at 25 and 2 jubilee clips. Came home, boiled some water, stuck one end of hosepipe in it to soften it, (put the jubilee clip over the pipe now) then managed to get it a good inch(2.5 cm) down over the hose adapter attached to the pump. Feel for the end of the adapter through the softened hose and put the jubilee clip about a cm down. ie you'll have 1cm of blue hose, then the jubilee clip, and tighten the jubilee clip as much as you can. I live alone with 3 young children, they were with their dad, because you can't have the manhole up with kids about. I managed to clear 18000 litres of water with this baby before it got too dark. Obviously, Xmas Day stopped play but today, Boxing Day, the kids went off with their dad, I got out the pump (I've left the hose attached to it) and pumped another 9000 litres down the manhole. This pump is brilliant and the hose is sturdy. Now to be struck down by lightening...I put a garden fork into the ground, put the pump straight into the flood water next to the fork and selotaped the float as high up the fork as it would go (this tricks the pump into thinking the water is that high)and unless you get a blockage, the pump keeps working (lower the float and it stops).

3.0 out of 5 stars Good pump in right circumstances 26 Dec 2012
    By Steve
This is a powerful little pump but with certain limitations and inevitable costly add-ons. The pump works best in deep water. In shallow lying water ( which is what I bought it for) it does not have sufficient vacuum, and the weird floatation on/off switch has a mind of its own. Also the extra hoses needed are ridiculously costly and you cannot do without them. Do not buy the flat hose alone as I was advised to do by B&Q staff, it just kinks all the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you choose the right type of pump! 14 Aug 2009
Firstly there is no doubt that this pump would probably work very well. However, when I ordered it I did not realise that there was no connection to use this with ordinary hose so you will need to purchase a wider lie flat type pipe at 20 - 40. This is not made clear on the Amazon shopping page. The pump rate on this is pretty high so in general terms you would only need it for clearing large amounts of water for example a flooded cellar. I sent this back and now have the hozelock buttpump which allows me to empty the water butts into the garden using my normal hose fittings and clear any standing water should the need ever occur (which I hope it dosen't). So in short sure it fits you requirements. By the way the hozelock buttpump is an excellent bit of kit. 5*.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good cellar clearer 21 Dec 2010
    Verified Purchase
This pump emptied a metre plus of water out of our cellar without a hitch - on solid for 7 hours but I'd thought it would have taken far longer.

The pump will not pump to a low level of water. It leaves too greater depth of water on the cellar floor.

We got this for basement flooding of about 4 inches. To work well it needs to be placed in a depression of about 6 inches down to allow the water to cover its base inlets. Read more

Seems to work fine with a good water flow, however on test I discovered that it needs to be fully submerged before the activator(floating switch connector) works. Read more
