This tool should be really designed by Dyson, as Hazelock did very bad design here. First of all it doesn't have power switch. So you have to run back and forth like mad, specially if you have small pond, before you will switch it off, half of the pond will be pumped out. Second problem is that it's heavy and akward to handle. Especially if you have a small pond.

But as there is not much choice of pond vacuum cleaners on the market Hazelock can get away with this. The way it works is that it sucks out water and anything you will point it at through the hose, to somewhere else (anywhere). It pumps water approx 70 litres a minute. So in our case 850 liters small pond, water would be pumped out completely in approx 12 minutes.

    SOLUTION

Ok, as we all need to clean our ponds anyway, my way around it is:

We have had small spur presurised filter which I have used to construct this superb solution.
You need to connect the hose from the PondVac to the pressurised filter and short hose from filter back to the pond. This way you can clean your pond for as much as you like without the need of topping up your pond when you finish. All dirt is simply stopped by pressurised filter.

Waste of money 5 July 2010
I thought Hozelock had a reputation for quality products so I took them at their word and bought one of these. But actually this product is nothing more than a little pump on a long stick. On the video on Hozelock's website, it looks effortless to use, but what they don't show you is how many times it blocks and needs stripping down and cleaning out. Mine has never worked for more than two or three minutes at a time. Thinking I must be doing something wrong I persevered, but despite trying the pondvac out lots of times I've had no success. Another annoyance is that it seems that the whole of the pump head has to be under water - which means that you can't vacuum the shallow shelves. I just feel it was a lot of money to spend on something so completely useless. Avoid!

Horses for courses 5 July 2010
    By STrange
Four stars for a horse that fits my course.

I have a seven foot long by four foot wide by three feet deep pond with butyl liner which I built myself about a year ago, it was clean from the start save for a few grains of sand. It has a pressurised filter and the water is very clear. The pond is by my own admission well over stocked and I do tend to overfeed my fish as I love to see them battle to gourge themselves.

I needed a pond cleaner that was easy to use once a week to keep the pond floor clear of fish waste. In this respect the Hozelock works perfectly. It was very easy to assemble, there is no disassembly when not in use, I take it out the shed put the drain hose in the flower bed and plug it in. It is comfortable to hold and use simply by use of a sweeping motion back and fourth. The fact that it drains water is useful for topping up with clean but you could put a filter bag on the outlet pipe and flush the drain water back into the pond. It has a useful clear window in the handle so that you can see what you are drawing up. The whole process takes 5 mins each week, very simple, no fuss or bother or without clouding the water, perfect for my needs.

What it wont do is pick up stones or sizeable vegetable matter (it does pick up sand and grit). My pond is new and I have kept it clean from the off, and I dont suffer with leaves or vegetation falling into it, if yours has stones in the base or routinely suffers from roting vegetation then the rotors will block and stop the machine. The rotors are relatively easy to clear out as the nozzle is removable but it will be a pain if you need to do it often.

If it had an on/off switch it would get 5 stars, you turn it off by pulling out the plug, not ideal with wet hands.

    Hozelock Pond Vac
The Vac did an excellent job of cleaning up the algae on the base of my 4ft x 6ft pond. The Vac could be improved by the addition of an On/Off switch on the pump.
