This book is a must have for anybody that knows the true meaning of winning. To play a game, one must have an understanding of the rules without any doubt to the validity in any situation. Hoyle gives the impression that he not only played every game known to man but he played them so thoroughly as to have experienced each and every shortfall in the basic rules. It is one thing to play a game of Backgammon and move the pieces around the board until there is a winner, it is another thing entirely to sit down to a serious competition and battle of strategy. What do you do if you come across a query in the rules... "If I move this piece first then I am unable to use the other move and so I escape a possible high risk situation " If neither person is confident that this is true but they play it anyway then whoever goes on to win this particular game is left with a sense of doubt as to how it really should have been played. Hoyle states..."Not all moves are able to be taken BUT if a player can play his whole move he must do so.."(not a direct quote). Yes winning is important but if you feel the other person is "making up the rules as they go along", you cannot possibly enjoy the playing experience or the winning experience.
