AS a professional photographer, having spent several hundred pounds on a lens it makes sense to protect it. Rather than correcting with a UV or skylight filter, I would rather use a protector filter for this purpose and Hoya' s Pro 1 Digital are among the best. What you want is a high optical clarity that will give protection without altering the lens characteristics that you have paid so much for - a sort of no filter filter. If you can find them at a bargain price, as I managed to do - so much the better.
