Biography

Though they had all the trappings of a Southern-fried blues band, Little Feat were hardly conventional. Led by songwriter/guitarist Lowell George, Little Feat were a wildly eclectic band, bringing together strains of blues, R&B, country, and rock & roll. The bandmembers were exceptionally gifted technically and their polished professionalism sat well with the slick sounds coming out of ... Read more in Amazon's Little Feat Store

Little Feat was one of those bands I got into during high school (mid-80's) after their heyday had come and gone. I had read a review in Rolling Stone's "All Music Guide" stating that Little Feat was "one of the best-loved American bands from the seventies." And here I was, a big fan of seventies music, and I had never heard of them. For better or worse, that reader's guide was my bible, so I thought I'd give the band a try and pick up a greatest hits of some sort and give it a try.
The first thing that drew me to "Hoy Hoy" was the cover art -- almost all of the 70's, 80's and 90's Little Feat albums have great artwork done by the late Neon Park (aka Martin Muller). A german shepard with a Hawaiian lei and antlers watching a bone with pink bird wings fly away while sitting in front of a smoking volcano. I liked it. RIP Neon Park.
I found the music equally appealing. Here you're getting a mix of album cuts and live versions of the music. The live version of "Rock and Roll Doctor" is one of the best tracks on the album. You also get a little Lowell George gem by name of "China White." These two songs are worth the price of the album alone. But it doesn't stop there. In addition to several other George contributions, you also get several Bill Payne and Paul Barrere contributions that are just as worthy. After getting this album, I had to get my hands on the rest of the band's material -- I didn't want to miss the other gems that didn't make this album.
If you've never heard of Little Feat before, it's hard to peg them in any sort of musical genre. You get elements of Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, and Funk. Every album relased was both visually and aurally appealing. Of course, Lowell George is no longer with us, his legacy lives on with this collection. Little Feat as a band continues to play as well. As far as I'm concerned, the "Rolling Stone Reader's Guide" was correct -- I love this band. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I've always loved Little Feat. Ever since I'd heard Waiting For Columus back in the 70's. This package is, in my opinion, absolute pure brilliance. The production is first rate as you'd expect. The first 2 live outakes Of Skin it Back and Red Streamliner are so good that you ever wonder how this band weren't huge. Highlight for me must be Gringo which is just so cool it makes you want to fire up a bifta and go chilling by the ocean on a warm summers day.
The musicianship is way advanced for the decade. Lowell George was just a great singer and writer and the whole band gel, especially as they had one of the best drummers around in Richie Heywood.Got to see Richie drumming for Robert Plant in 1983 (i think) and he was just brilliant.
All in all a great place to start a listening experience of quality music

Perhaps realizing that Down on the Farm wasn't the proper swan song for Little Feat, the group persuaded Warner Brothers to release a compilation of rarities and overlooked tracks as a swan song and farewell to fans. Filled with live performances, obscurities, album tracks, and a new song apiece from Bill Payne and Paul Barrere, Hoy Hoy is a bit scattered, a bit incoherent, a little bewildering, and wholly delightful ¡X a perfect summation of a group filled with quirks, character, and funk, traits which were as much a blessing as they were a curse. Hoy Hoy is one of those rare albums that may be designed for diehards ¡X who else really needs radio performances, early recordings from before the band was signed, and outtakes, especially if they're surrounding by early album tracks? ¡X but still is a great introduction for novices. That doesn't mean it's as good as such masterpieces as Sailin' Shoes, Dixie Chicken, or Waiting for Columbus, but it does capture the group's careening, freewheeling spirit, humor, and musical versatility, arguably better than any single album. That's one of the nice things compilations like this can do ¡X they can summarize what a band was all about in a way a straight studio album couldn't. So, that's why it may be a good gateway into the band for novices, even though it's missing such essentials as "Willin'" and "Fat Man in the Bathtub," but it's truly for the dedicated, who will not only love the rarities (and these live cuts are hotter, on whole, than Columbus) but will savor the context.
