Review

'I have never read anything like this before. I could not put this book down because I found it amazing. Annemarie Allan is an amazing writer. In the future I will absolutely read more of her novels.' -- Nathalie Black, Queensferry High School, reporting for Teen Titles Magazine 'Hox is a breathlessly paced, action adventure, set, as all Kelpies Prize winning books have to be, in contemporary Scotland. An excellent debut novel by Annemarie Allan.' -- Books for Keeps, May 2008 'This is a superb, intelligent and gripping novel. The strange bond between a boy and an animal draws you in and you will be desperate to know what happens next.' -- John Baker, Waterstone's Guide to Children's Books 'Young readers will love this' -- Stuart Peterson, The Greenock Telegraph 'The impressive details creates an atmosphere that is unmistakeably Scottish ... Touching on the complex topical issue of genetic engineering, this is a faced paced and intriguing adventure with a satisfying but simple plot and a pleasing, if predictable ending.' -- writeaway.org.uk 'A satisfying resolution of mysteries and an easy-to-follow plot, suitable for animal lovers of 10 to 13.' -- Alison A. Maxwell-Cox, The School Librarian, Spring 2008 'To find a plot which is politically correct and inclusive without being patronising, exciting for 8-12 year olds but acceptable to their grannies is a real challenge and 2007 Kelpies Prize winner has certainly met that challenge. Hox is science fiction, a mystery, an adventure, all rolled together through the world of genetic engineering.' -- Suse Coon, Lothian Life

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lynx Links!, 11 Nov 2007
This review is from: Hox (Kelpies) (Paperback)
Annemarie Allan's debut novel is the worthy winner of the 2007 Kelpies Prize. In common with pervious Kelpies the story has a distinctly Scottish setting.

The story opens at a research laboratory where scientists are experimenting with the hox gene. While his father is in a meeting, twelve year-old Robbie visits the lab's animal house where he comes face to face with a huge wild cat called Baldur - and discovers they share a strange telepathic bond, able to sense each other's thoughts. Realising that Baldur is desperate for freedom, Robbie plans to release the lynx and its mate, then guide them to the safety of the highlands. What follows is a perilous chase through a harsh wintry landscape, with danger only a whisker behind them - and the mysterious truth about his links with the lynx always a tantalizing footstep or two ahead.

HOX combines contemporary science, action adventure, and a wonderfully atmospheric setting ... delivered at a breathless pace that makes it utterly unputdownable. Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant Adventure, 13 Nov 2007
This review is from: Hox (Kelpies) (Paperback)
Hox is a cracking adventure, suspenseful, intriguing, fast paced and full of mystery. It has a contemporary theme: genetic research, combined with the sort of adventure story that is timeless. Stong characters, vivid scenery and a mystical element.

What I loved was the originality and I am sure anyone who buys this book will feel that they have made an excellent choice.

This book is very well deserving of the Floris prize and I hope it is the first of many from the author: Annemarie Allan
