Product Description

Quirky, comedy horror Australian film, also known as The Marsupials - Howling III, and with nothing other than the title to link it to the earlier Hollywood-made Howling movies, other than the fact they are all about Werewolves. Here Barry Otto (Strictly Ballroom) is maverick Professor Harry Beckmeyer who learns to understand the torment of a freak species when he experiments on a captured "Werewolf" in his lab. When the goverments wants the experiments stopped and all traces of the species wiped out Harry (who's now fallen in love with the marsupial girl, Jerboa - Imogen Annesley) is determined to protect her no matter what.

I only bought this because I'm a fan of Howling 1,4 and 5 and I'm now sorry I did. This is not by any means a horror film it's a comedy with a couple of shock moments. Made in Australia by director Phil Mora (who directed Howling 2 and that is the only connection to the Howling series of movies) it centres on a group of friendly werewolves and there plight, only a small part by actress Glenda Linscott(Rita Conners in prisoner cell block h) as one of the werewolf nuns saves this from becoming the worst of the series for me. Even a small cameo from dame Edna at the end can't save it.

I found this flick very watchable and highly entertaining. While some of the later 'Howlings' go for more of the suspenseful, psychological horror. This third one is an all out cheese attack!

We follow a a young marsupial werewolf as she leaves her 'Pack' and sets out towards the big city. Getting involved with the shooting of a low budget movie (called shape shifters!) she meets the future Mr Wolf and we're off. Her pack wants her back, Lycanthrope nuns are after her and so are scientists backed by various government officials. So we bounce from one amusing set piece to the next.

The story keeps you watching as it keeps expanding and adding new characters (including a Russian ballet dancing werewolf!). The picture is well shot and lit so bright in places it looks like a cartoon! Make up effects are very latex-y and cheap but look good enough to not distract you too much (apart from eliciting the odd chuckle!) and we get some great locations. From Sydney to the Australian outback the film-makers knew how to squeeze a lotta production value outta their surroundings.

Overall this film has no pretensions it knows what it is and works well within its limitations producing an entertaining colourful werewolf romp.

Despite that this film is poorly acted in a few places, it is worth watching as it has a very interesting story line. It follows a young werewolf girl who runs away from her pack, to go in to the city. Where she meets an all around nice human guy who falls in love with her.

The story from then on follows their lives and the lives of the pack, its changes and trials. As well as the humans finding out about these werewolves existence, which isn't a good thing.

Most interesting of all is the werewolves themselves who are related to the Thylacine and have pouches to carry there new born children who are tiny when first born.

I say give this movie a shot, if you’re a fan of the howling series.
