(1970 'Vestapol')(80mns) 'Filmed & recorded live at the Washington D.C.

Howlin' Wolf enters the stage by crawling on all fours - and that pretty much sets the tone for the rest of his performance. I bought this DVD because I'm a huge Wolf fan. The concert is poor - it's in black and white, the sound quality is not that good. Wolf spends a lot of time talking to the audience, sharing with them his thoughts on life, women, war veterans and how the young should show more respect for veterans who fought in both world wars. He does this as the band is playing. The result is that it is hard to make out what he is saying. There are no subtitles available. This may be no bad thing as the snippets I did catch seem to be incoherent rubbish.

It has to be said that the band is excellent, with Hubert Sumlin and Sunnyland Slim on guitar and piano respectively doing fine work. Wolf's performance is less than impressive, his singing is often flat, he forgets his words and frquently repeats the same verses. When not singing or talking he struts around the stage, at times looking like an inebriated gorilla, at other times looking like a self satisfied Benito Mussolini. If we add the the above, the video makers cut off "Howling for my Darling" when it had barely started and slapped the end credits to what probably was one of the best songs of the set "Sitting on Top of the World" - which they also cut and you will realise that I'm less than impressed with this effort.

It gets 3 stars because it's fairly cheap and it is the only DVD I could find of the Wolf in concert. That said, there is concert footage of the Wolf on "The Howling Wolf Story" which is a much better offering, but on that DVD it is interspersed with interviews and voice over.

I'm sure there must be other oncert fottage of Wolf out there somewhere. Let's hope that someone gets it together to release it - it has got to be better than this, but this is better than nothing at all.

POOR QUALITY 29 Sep 2011
Format:DVD
THE STANDARD OF SOUND AND PICTURE ON THIS DISC IS VERY POOR. ONE WOULDN'T EXPECT TODAYS STANDARDS ON A 1970 CONCERT BUT THIS ONE IS TERRIBLE AND I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT IF I HAD KNOWN.

Living History. 28 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
The old tail-dragger meets campus kids. The wolf bares his considerable soul in front of collage kids who are too naive or too distracted to care. They ain't seen nuthin' like the Wolf and they ain't too sure how to react. But Chester ain't bothered, he tells it as it is as he's always done and always will. Be honest, be brave, be true and be great. If a better man ever stood on a stage - mail me. Otherwise, press play and rejoyce.
