As 2013 came to a close, and with his 80th birthday mere weeks away, the godfather of British blues quietly entered a North Hollywood Studio with his band, special guest C.J. Just bought on the basis of the good sounding amazon samples and it truly is a very good sound quality release !!

Admittedly the CD mastering isn't terrific as the stereo balance is to the left, some titles are faded out and there are volume variations, but the underlying recordings are very good and the music is well up to the usual standard from this label, which also includes the great Savoy Brown pair of live recordings.

Buy with confidence !!

The sound quality of this is good, on par with many official live albums from the 1970s.

Tracks : Mexico City ,Gone from the cayon, caught in the Middle,John Lee Boogie, Live Huntington Beach California USA May 1980.
Emergency Boogie : Minneapolis 3.6.82
Rolling With the Blues, Howlin Moon, Room to move : Chicago 5.6.82
Sitting Here Alone : Rome Italy , 7.12.82
The Stumble : Lugo italy 7.12.82

musicians:
John Mayall Voice+keys,Harp, etc all tracks plus the following :
Tracks 1-4 James Quill-Smith Guitar , Kevin McCormick Bass, Soko Richardson Drums, Red Holloway Sax
5-8 Mick Taylor Guitar, John McVie Bass, Colin Allen Drums
9+10 as 5-8 except Steve Thompson in place of John McVie.

Ignore the other reviews moaning about the sound quality, yes its not up to U2 Live on dvd from the 21st century quality however it is still good and nothing like the dreadful bootleg quality some reviews suggest.
If you like John Mayall Buy it !
If you like Mick Taylor but it !
If you buy this and like it and you have not got the DVD of the 1982 reunion show that is also available on amazon then
buy the DVD today as you will love that too.
NB: I am NOT a John Mayall nut!
Buy it you won't be disappoinred !

This album demonstrates that John Mayall has certainly not been just dragging dragging round the same old act al these years. There are some wonderfully dynamic performances here. Okay so the recordings are not the highest of technical quality but they are generally pretty crisp and very good compared with any other live recording of the same era. Either the .com reviews below are for a different album or the reviewers are just staggeringly wrong.

Nice graphics .. 21 May 2011

The nice "groovy " artwork on this Cd does not disguise the fact that it is a low fi bootleg sounding release ..buyer beware . listen to samples first .

I wish they weren't right 23 Jun. 2011
By The Plunkster - Published on Amazon.com

As a huge John Mayall fan, I was so hoping that the other reviewers were wrong with their blasting of John's latest release "Howlin' At The Moon". Unfortunately, they're not. I actually give it two stars instead of one, because the music ain't bad, and is the vintage blues we have come to expect from Mr. Mayall. But the thing sounds like it was recorded on one of those old cassette tape players that we all used to sneak in to concerts in the early 70's so we could get our free "bootleg" recording of the show. Just awful sound quality. The goal on the recording may have been to get a "raw" sound but it just doesn't work. An awful recording of some pretty decent tunes.

Yes, I do fully agree with the previous two reviewers. Beware, unless you want a not very good FI historic lesson!

I love the past work but this was so not what I expected. I have already donated it to Goodwill.

I thought this was a good compilation cd. Good Songs and a good band.
The sound is fine. I'm not hearing what the others seem to be complaining about.
