Talkin' Howlin' Wolf

The blues has been a wellspring for rivers of pop, rock and R&B and there's nothing quite like returning to the source. In the mid-'60s, Chess Records released a series of legendary "best of" albums for Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin' Wolf. Under each artist's name, The Real Folk Blues was issued in 1966 and a More Real Folk Blues ... Read more in Amazon's Howlin' Wolf Store

Product Description

Product Description

Chester Burnett, better known as Howlin Wolf, was one of the most important and influential figures in Chicago Blues through the 1950s, and along with Muddy Waters helped to establish the electric blues style that laid the foundations for rock music in subsequent decades. With his imposing physical presence and loud, almost fearsome voice, he was a powerful and impressive performer, who wrote and popularised songs which have become classic standards of the genre, like Spoonful, Smokestack Lightning, Killing Floor and Red Rooster, which became fixtures in the repertoire of bands like The Rolling Stones, who very much championed his cause and widened his reputation in the latter years of his career. This collection brings together both sides of all the singles he released through the RPM and Chess labels during the first hugely important decade of his career, along with bonus tracks comprising recordings made at sessions during this period which were not released as singles at the time. Its a great-value 80-track 3-CD set, which showcases one of the major personalities of the blues.

This marvellous 3-CD set contains 64 'A' & 'B' sides in chronological order recorded for RPM & CHESS in Memphis or Chicago between 1951 & 1962. In addition there are 16 tracks from 1951-1953 which were not released as singles.
Howlin' Wolf's intensely powerful and primal singing is well displayed on these 80 tracks with stellar sidemen such as Willie Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon & Earl Phillips.
Howlin' Wolf aka Chester Burnett(1910-1976) had a huge influence on many British blues/rock musicians in the '60s. This collection is a superb overview of the first decade or so of his recordings and an affordable alternative to the hard-to-find HIP-O SELECT 4-CD set.

Brilliant collection of all the Howl' Wolf sides that matter. Alongside Muddy Waters as my top rated blues musician. Powerful blues from a mighty singer with a great band urging him on. Highly recommended.

After having only one HW compilation CD for nearly 20 years decided to buy this excellent 11 year overview of the great man's recordings between '51 and 62. Excellent value for money at 10 or so for 80 recordings. Confident that (God willing) I'll still playing this in 20 years time.

Treat yourself.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the B sides were. Extremely good value for the price - and an auto-rip too!
