A compact and economical selection of Ginsberg's poems, including the title poem Howl.
For Ginsberg fans, nothing to say.
For those who are too young to have lived the 'Beat Generation' but were made curious by the film Howl (directed by Friedman & Epstein), as I was, a fantastic opportunity to dig deeper ..... I saw the film, bought the book and read all the poems, went back and saw the film a second time (having bought the dvd - it is a film which only improves on watching a second time....)
The sort of book for wandering round parks and reading aloud.... or reading slowly and fantasising.... just listening to the rhythm of the words....
Love it or hate it - interesting in any case

'Howl' is a short book of poetry, but each poem enclosed hits you with full force and intensity. They open you up to feeling and for that brief moment in time you are completely immersed in the world Ginsberg creates. I'm unaware of the controversy surrounding these poems, but all I can say is that these are some great poems that deserve to be read by a much wider audience. Poetry is a unique and powerful experience (both reading and writing) and this collection is no different. Well worth a look.

Bought this as an introduction to Ginsberg's poetry and loved flicking through the pages reading a poem a day. Very small book but classic.

Allen Ginsberg's HOWL and Other Poems does what true poetry is supposed to do...break all barriers. It does that in a way unmatched by any other book of poetry. Poetry is written for self sepression...so that we can carry on in collective individualism. Not only does Ginsberh thoroughly express himself in these hiply fresh poems, but he gives us the keys to his soul...he unlocks the jambs. Squares would squeal, and yet, he did was poetry was intended to do...reveal the soul's deepest thoughts. Dig it.

This CD comprises of Ginsberg reading a selection of the poems from Ginsberg's Howl & other poems including an unabridged live recording of Howl.
The sound quality is good, the words are audible and clear though it is by no means a pristine studio reading (hence no 5 stars).
By listening to this you can get a sense of the fervour and energy Ginsberg had about his poetry. This is what the Beat Generation was about and you can hear it rather than try and work it out from the biographies and second hand accounts.
This is good stuff and I'd recommed it to anyone.

Having had the unique pleasure of hearing him read HOWL in the FAC at Umass-Amherst, amongst many of his lesser works, i was moved often to tears. He told all 1000 or so of us young minds that because we gathered here for him he would read Howl for the first time in many years. This was one of his last appearances as he sat there a much older and frail man, he died nearly a year later. It was an experience i will remember till my dying day.

There are pleanty of sources and commentaries available throughout the web and otherwise on The Howl, so I will not try and go into too much detail here. Basically it is a mental free-flow that howver has a consistency and coherency which however you cannot exactly put your finger on. It is not for everyone and a friend I suggested it to said it was "incomprehensible garbage". So be it, to some it will seem as such. To others, however, it is a truly unique piece of art. Art meant in its deepest of forms.

Ginsberg - The name flashes at you like some familiar face in a crowd of a thousand faces. He grasps every thread of the Beat Generation and embodies it in his work. The poem "A Supermarket in California" details a mystic journey into the thoughts of a Wandering writer who, in such a mind, asks " ...and you, Garcia Lorca, what were you doing down by the watermelons?" The book "Howl and other Poems" wonderfully pieces together some of the most enticing and thought-provoking works of Allen Ginsberg. This book allows you to sample poems from the reknowned "Howl", to the light airiness of"Asphodel". At one time, Ginsberg was compared to the genius mind of Walt Whitman, by using the similar style of repetition in his poetry. Now, Ginsberg is noted for his own syle of Genius, and his use of "mental tatalization" that simply cannot be compared with any other, even those in the Beat Generation.
