Product Description

Review

Herbert Howells's considerable reputation rests upon the great services he wrote for King's school, Gloucester and St Paul's Cathedral in the 1940s and 50s. Later works, such as his evensong canticles for Winchester, Salisbury and Chichester, have failed to find their way into the regular repertoire but this recording by a radiant Winchester Cathedral Choir urges a thorough reappraisal. The long, fluid lines, startling cadences and massive chords which are so unique to Howells are all here in "their" service, and they delight in some smaller works, particularly "Thee Will I Love" from 1970, with Simon Bell adding some delicious organ solos --Observer,29/05/11

If you're new to Howells, then this survey of late works is great place to make his acquaintence.Hyperion's recorded sound and booklet presentation underline underline the project's sheer quality, while Winchester's assistant director of music.Simon Bell, also commands attention with bold, imaginatively voiced organ playing. **** --Classic fm Magazine, Aug'11

The Winchester Cathedral Choir is first- rate:intelligently responsive to the texts, phrasing naturally shaped and with near flawless ensemble and dynamic control, all admirably demonstrated throughout. IRR OUTSTANDING --IRR,July/Aug'11

A fine recording and an excellent booklet help to make this a CD to treasure. --Gramophone,Sept'11

The performances of the Winchester Cathedral Choir are so good you hardly register the need to 'assess'them-exactly as it should be in devotional music.A marvellous CD,beautifully planned and executed. Performance***** Recording ***** --BBC Music Magazine,Sept'11

CD Description

Hyperion s previous recordings with Winchester Cathedral Choir are among the jewels in its choral collection. Now the label begins a new relationship with this ancient foundation and its latest director of music, Andrew Lumsden. Their new disc features a composer who was at the centre of the English twentieth-century choral tradition. Herbert Howells is a unique and distinctive voice in church music and it is his lyrical anthem Like as the Hart and his compositions of the 1940s and 50s for which he is most known and celebrated. However, his late works are equal in beauty and intensity and it is these that are featured on this superb recording. They are often over-looked as a result of their difficulty but Winchester Cathedral Choir reveal them as unjustly neglected gems. The Winchester Service, written in 1969, has its roots in plainchant and demonstrates the composer's chromatic sophistication and the incredible depth of his harmonic palette. The choir display a clear affinity with the composer. They perform with sensitivity and precision and their glorious sound is quintessentially English.

Howells is, of course, a particular taste. Some people will buy this because they love Howells and want "more of the same" and they will certainly not be disappointed. For myself, I bought this because of the new recording of the Winchester Evening Service - and I was delighted: since I first got to know this setting via a Winchester LP of nearly 40 years ago, I've always thought this was one of the very best Howells settings of the evening canticles. This recording does not disappoint.

The majority of the music on this disc was unknown to me. I knew of it, but had never heard any of it. As a choir member in a parish church that sang regular choral music to a high level I have collected many discs both vinyl and cd of various music that either we sang as a choir, or that I had heard at various Cathedral Evensongs.
Winchester Cathedral Choir are too my mind 'up there' with the likes of Kings College-Cambridge, St Johns College-Cambridge, Westminster Abbey, St Albans Cathedral choir, Christchurch Cathedral choir. Winchester Cathedral choir like the afore mentioned choirs are ones that I tend to follow, buy cd's, check the Music Lists regularly or attend evensong where possible. This is purely because the standard of the choir is as high as it's going to get, and this disc reflects this in that the musicality, texture, harmonies and overall tone of the choir, especially the boys is at a standard rarely bettered. Andrew Lumsden has every reason to be very happy with the choir at Winchester and I hope they continue to make discs such as this for may years to come. There is some beautiful singing here, well accompanied and directed - Highly reccomended. - Is there a Bryan Kelly disc out there anywhere - surely there's enough repetoire to make a complete disc. Come on Winchester.

This is a particularly satisfying CD - it is mentioned that much of Howell's later music is unknown - and this will do much to remedy that. It is wonderful music - superbly sung.
