Format:Audio CD
I came relatively recently to the music of Herbert Howells, after years of interest in other English composers. Howells is one of those composers who people tend to know of, without knowing much of the music. 'Hymnus Paradisi' is the unqualified masterpiece in his catalogue, but otherwise, his work suffered neglect in performance and recording, on the whole for almost the entire LP era. CD has brought many fine works back from specialist oblivion, with Chandos and Hyperion being equal champions in that regard.
This disc is my favourite of the chamber releases. It never fails to thrill with its mixure of luminous delicacy and heart-on-the-sleeve passion. The Sonata No1, for example, has a completely disarming melody that one longs to hear again and again. All the pieces on the disc come from Howells's first flush of composition, and are astonishingly assured, sparkling without being facile. The disc happens to be an excellent introduction to Howells the man, too. The perfect antidote to a dull day.

These are special performances of some wonderful music, a revelation to those who only know Howells' church music. Not only are they intensely lyrical pieces but they are structually very satisfying. The players manage to convey the flux of moods and the fluid lyricism very effectively and with consummate musicianship. I urge you to buy this bargain as soon as possible!
