Product Description

Product Description

This volume covers all aspects of satellite television technology in a style that is designed to break "tech-talk" down into easily understood reading. It is intended to assist consumers with the installation, maintenance and repair of their satellite systems. It also contains sufficient technical information to appeal to technicians as a reference. Coverage includes C, Ku, and DBS signals. The chapters examine topics such as: how satellite television technology works; parts of a satellite television reception system; installing the hardware portion of your system; installing the electronics of your system; and installing your DSS, DBS, or Primestar System.

I was approached by a friend of a friend who has a very unusual hobby. He is 'into' satellite TV in a big way and although largely self taught had setup a TV studio for the reception and recording of satellite TV programmes. His interest is not so much in the transmitted material itself but rather the communications technology that enables the programmes to be broadcast across the World. I was approached because of my long experience with satellite communications and asked if I could resolve a problem for him involving a steady decrease in the quality of signal reception. I suggested he reviewed the satellite pointing angles he was using and with further questioning it slowly dawned upon me that there were gaps in his technical knowledge. He asked if I could recommend a good book on satellite TV technology and upon browsing the Amazon website I stumbled upon a book published by Howard W. Sams called, 'Guide to Satellite TV Technology' by John A. Ross and available in paperback form. This is quite an old book and was last published in 1999. However, whilst the technology has continued to develop during the past decade the basic principles of satellite TV broadcasting have not. This book can now be purchased secondhand at a greatly reduced price so I decided to buy a copy for future reference. There is a strong bias towards American satellite TV systems within the book but that is no handicap for UK enthusiasts. The book proved to be everything I expected it to be. I docked 1-star because a new edition of the book is long overdue.

Mix of Telecom basics and old Satellite TV Technology 28 Sep 2002
By FABIO FLOSI - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a mixture of Electronics/Telecom basics and no updated Satellite TV Technology. Around 1/3 of the book shows basics concepts ( Resonance , Heterodyning , Demodulation , Full-Wave Rectifiers , Zener Diode Regulators , etc. ). Chapters 3 , 4 and 5 ( around 90 pages ) describe the old Big-Dish Systems , used to receive C-band signals .Chapter 8 , dedicated to DBS systems , is very superficial ( just 25 pages ). The same occurs with chapter 10 , that presents Encryption/Decryption Technologies : 29 pages with no updated information. Finally , the Index found in the end of the book is very confused ; for example ,DBS Satellite Transponder refers the reader to page 214 , where will be found the schematic diagram for an IRD channel display circuit .
