5.0 out of 5 stars If you like 70s soul, you'll love this 11 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD
Like many people, I suspect, I bought this as part of the excellent Atlantic 20CD Soul Legends box set. I started at the "back" of the set with this CD and Sam Dees' one. the Howard Tate one is a great example of post-60s soul. It is not designed for upbeat dancing. Most tracks have an slowish infectious funky beat with superb horns backing. Howard's singing reminds me of that other 70s soul singer Bobby Womack. If you're a fan of Bobby, you should add this, or the Atlantic box setAtlantic Soul Legends : 20 Original Albums From The Iconic Atlantic Label, to your wants list.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT REISSUE- R&B LEGEND Howard Tate 20 Mar 2003
By "cooking1" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Although his great Verve sides remain out of print thanks to UNIVERSAL , this reissue of this terrific overlooked R&B singer's 1972 ATLANTIC sides (produced by Jerry Ragovoy) is a welcome addition for all soul fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Howard Tate atlantic LP 20 July 2002
By John Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
A must for fans of late 60's soul! Howard Tate is a powerful southern-style soul singer who ranks amoung the best. This is a very good lp featuring Howards great vocals, Jerry Ragovoy's (janis Jolpin, etc) writing and arranging as well as top notch Atlantic studio band session work. A HEAVY record!

This is an excellent album and is hard to stop listening too. From Tate's falsetto to Ragavoy's funk groove hooks and arrangements . . . a must for any soul fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Find Of The Year 23 Oct 2011
By C. Franklin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a wonderfully performed and recorded album. Some thing about the way stuff was made in the late 60's early 70's just floats my boat. Howards' voice is like a fuller stronger Robert Cray, and the supporting musicians are just piling it on thick. Juicy organ, fat dynamic bass and classic horns. This is a soul funk classic!
4.0 out of 5 stars Soul pleasing 16 Mar 2012
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a fine, fine, fine album, one that I kick myself for not hearing until very recently. I'm tempted to give it 5 stars, but I'm holding back for now, not fully convinced this quite lives up to being a classic. But it will certainly impress and please any fan of 60s & 70s soul, particularly the southern style. Most of the songs here were written by producer Jerry Ragovoy, except for a swell version of Dylan's "Girl of the North Country," and a great song that ends the album, "The Bitter End," written by Tate himself. Soul fans; don't pass up on this one.
