Product Description

CD Description

Following the success of Howard Goodall’s Enchanted Voices and the Christmas album Enchanted Carols, the celebrated British composer returns with Pelican in the Wilderness, again fronted by his extraordinary female choral group Enchanted Voices and also features The Tippett Quartet. The album is a collection of newly arranged Psalms, including "By The Waters Of Babylon", and a new arrangement of his world famous "Psalm 23: The Lord Is My Shepherd". The title, Pelican in the Wilderness takes its name from a line in Psalm 102.

I had been eagerly anticipating this new album, which is the third CD from Enchanted Voices with music composed by Howard Goodall, Classical Brit Composer of the Year. I am not disappointed! The 13 psalms (from a variety of sources including Elizabethan versions in the form of poems and the Bay Psalm Book of 1640) are truly stunning. The sublime melodies sung by these incredible female voices soar above the rich texture of the Tippett String Quartet. Most of the music is new, but there is one track which will be familiar to anyone who watched 'The Vicar of Dibley' as Howard Goodall's Psalm 23 was the theme music for that series. This new setting is equally beautiful. The CD's title comes from Psalm 102 - 'Like Pelican in wilderness, like owl in desert so am I; I watch, and like a sparrow am, on house top solitarily....' Enjoy!

Simply Sublime 13 May 2010
This new CD from acclaimed composer Howard Goodall is an absolute gem. The psalms are beautifully set with gorgeous melodies you'll be humming all day. The Tippett Quartet's playing is stunning, and the singers give an amazing performance, with some particularly beautiful solos. This is the kind of CD you want to listen to over and over again. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Not as good as Libera 26 Sep 2010
I got a Classical Brits 2010 CD free from the Daily Mail and absolutely loved the song By the Waters of Babylon. So quickly ordered this Pelican in the Wilderness CD. But to my dismay, the only song that I truly liked was still By the Waters of Babylon. Everything else was mediocre. Oh yes, I listened to the sample music offered by Amazon, but you really couldn't tell much from those few seconds.

I would say if you like this type of music, you are better off with Libera.

Wonderful CD. Transport yourself to a churchly realm with these angelic voices. The crystal clear sound of sopranos is a religious experience. It's worship in music.

Well worth buying
Had listened to a preview of the CD prior to release on Classic FM and was delighted with my purchase. Really relaxing listening and I find it very destressing music as well. Read more
