Book Description

28 Mar 2012
Learning a new language is fun -- and having a book guiding you every step of the way, written from a student's point of view, is a great start!

Experience Lucky's passion for teaching Mandarin Chinese to students around the world through her comprehensive and professionally produced online video series to help you build fluency in record time!

A fantastic book for both beginners and advanced students!

  • Step by step learning process with each chapter building onto the next
  • Multiple in-chapter exercises to reinforce new learnings along with real-life conversation dialogs
  • Pinyin and Simplified Chinese characters throughout
  • In-book Chinese <---> English mini-dictionaries
  • Comprehensive video series tie-ins to help with your pronunciation and fluency
  • Chinese history and modern cultural notes
  • Over 170 photographs taken across China!
Although Chinese is made up of a variety of dialects, the Chinese in this book is called Putonghua, which uses the Beijing speech sounds as its standard pronounciation. The Northern dialect is now the standard across mainland China.

This book is specifically written from the perspective of a new learner. This means it uses extensive testing, imagery and practical conversations to help you become familiar with Mandarin Chinese in an intensive manner. There are also plenty of bonus materials to help you gain cultural insights, further helping you to understand the way Chinese citizens think.

The goal of this book, written by both Lucky and Jon, is to help you gain a deep, intensive understanding of this amazing language that has remained mostly unchanged for thousands of years.

This book is only the beginning, though--there is also an extensive library of videos to take things even further. This is not yet another "Learn Mandarin Chinese in x days" kind of book; this is part of a full multimedia experience that you will want to keep even after you become completely fluent! This is why we have also included the Chinese Simplified characters, not just the Pinyin you typically see in a book of this kind. If your goal is to learn the Chinese characters at a later date, this book will help you tremendously!

Although nothing replaces physically going to China for a vacation and experiencing Chinese culture firsthand, hopefully these photographs will give you a taste of what is there waiting for you to explore it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning Mandarin Chinese:No fear,All fun......Really. 18 April 2012

I've been taking Mandarin Chinese lessons for one year and also studying Lucky's video lessons for about the same time.I was searching on-line for additional help.Lucky and Jon's new book,HowtoChinese.com:A Practical Mandarin Chinese Course(Volume 1),is GREAT! The font of the book is done very well.The english as well as the Chinese characters are printed very clear.There is a content list before each chapter that includes a reference list for the on-line videos that apply to that particular chapter.The great thing is that the book doesn't just repeat the video.Both the book and videos support each other but a student can still use one or both as a learning tool.The teaching style of Lucky really comes through by the inclusion of pictures of different places around China and Chinese Proverbs before each lesson.This makes the lessons fun and interesting.The content of each chapter emphasizes the main point of the subject in a way that is easy to understand and remember.The Chinese-English,English-Chinese Dictionaries are presented in an easy to use manner with the Chinese characters also printed with each word.This is great practice for learning to recognize characters Even though the book has 400 plus pages it is the right size to fit in a small carry-on.It is good for advanced students as an organized review tool.It's good for beginners because it is referenced with easy to follow explanations.I will refer to this book even as I learn more Mandarin Chinese.I highly recommend this book for new and veteran Mandarin Chinese students.Lucky and Jon have worked hard to make this book unique and extremely user friendly.What a wonderful success!
