From the Author

'How To Pay Less For More' is primarily for people who want their money to go further by getting better deals than the advertised prices. This could include taking control of the negotiation of your house -- or buying a brand new car and getting £2000 off the brochure price, as well as a free tank of petrol.

It also allows you to focus on areas where the skills developed in negotiation can be put to other uses. For example, asking for a pay-rise, and looking at ways you can show your company that flexible hours for you will work well for them as well.

It also goes beyond that, as persuasion and thinking of what motivates other people is all part of negotiation; these skills can even help persuade your children to do their homework!!

I know this because the book brings into play many of the areas I have developed in my own life over the years.

But for me, although negotiation began as a toddler, I truly developed the skills in business, having worked within National Newspaper Media Sales in the UK for 20 years.

I then graduated as a coach with the world renowned Coach U; coaching skills allowed me to look at the subject in a way that would help others understand the process - and that was what enabled me to write this book.So if you would like (or indeed need) to see your money go further, this book is a must for your tool-kit to better financial planning.

It's written in a fun and interesting way, as when I have read educational books, I have often found them rather stuffy and heavy going.

The book is designed with different readers in mind.

You can either read it from cover to cover and enjoy the growth you achieve as you begin your journey to become an all-round negotiator. Or, if you're like my Dad and you prefer to head straight for the instruction manuals 'quick set-up' section, then I have made that possible too; by giving you chapters on specific key negotiation areas, for example selling a property or arranging a wedding.

I loved writing this book as I'm passionate about negotiation, its benefits and the satisfaction it gives me as my clients benefit from the skills learnt.

Furthermore, it's helped me build on relationships, think much more strategically and prepare effectively for most situations.

I learn something new every day that helps me become a better negotiator - it is a true life-long skill.

I hope you enjoy the book - if you do, please let Amazon know.

Happy negotiating!

Marc Lockley

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll recoup the cover price and more 22 April 2008
Format:Paperback
The techniques in this book are well worth the cover price, which the savvy negotiator is likely to more than recover with his first successful negotiation. Marc is an experienced salesman turned negotiation coach well equipped to liberate your "inner negotiator". In his book he shares a wealth of expertise, including tools and tips, at a fraction of the price his clients pay for coaching. Whatever your lifestyle, and whatever you're buying, Marc will help you raise your game.

I like the practical, no-nonsense style. It's easy to read and crammed full of ideas. As Marc points out, negotiation is the rule rather than the exception in business. He's sharing those same skills with us as consumers. I also like the fact an expert such as Marc has the confidence to say anyone can become a good negotiator.

The basics are covered in the first, short section and there's a handy glossary at the end if you forget what some of the more technical phrases mean. Marc quickly busts the common myths that negotiation is hard or embarassing, and there's a nice bit on body language to support the words you use.

The middle part of the book is a series of handy templates guiding readers through their most probable negotiation experiences - buying and selling a house (and how to manage estate agents to your advantage), getting a great deal on hotels and holidays, organising a wedding (you can apply the same principles to any big celebration such as a birthday or anniversary) buying a car and buying electrical gadgets. There's also a final chapter on complaining effectively - which is, after all, another type of negotiation.

The final chapters cover job-related negotiation: how to get better pay, conditions and working arrangements. In my experience most people are even worse at negotiation here than in their shopping habits.

Once you've read the book, you're hooked and negotiation begins to become a way of life. All those savings mount up - and it needn't stop there. In a postscript Marc suggests that taking a negotiative approach can improve your personal relationships and help you manage your children. I'm hoping he's planning to write another, more detailed book on this subject next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for saving money 10 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
Really useful little book. Clearly laid out and entertainingly written - full of great tips and anecdotes. Will give you new confidence in dealing with sharp-suited salesmen. Ive never been much of a negotiator but i read it before buying my house recently and reckon i saved a few thousand pounds - it gave me a better idea of how the estate agents and the sellers were thinking.
Thoroughly reccomended.
