A writer is someone who writes. It sounds obvious, but many people who call themselves writers don't produce enough words in a year to fill a postcard. Other writers churn out thousands of words but never sell their work. This book tackles both problems: it gets you writing, easily and painlessly guiding you through the dreaded 'writer's block', and it divulges industry secrets that will help you to raise the quality of your work to a professional level. Writing is a business like any other. Successful writers know the rules and conventions that make their work stand out from the rest of the 'slush pile' - rules Stewart Ferris now reveals in How to be a Writer that will help launch your writing career.

Review

'Ideal for writers who are just setting out but who have little idea how to go about it'
-- Writing Magazine, December 2007

From the Author

In my 14 years as a publisher I've rejected manuscripts from over 8,000 authors. Time and again I see the same problems in their writing, and as a result I developed a simple ten stage plan to help authors reach a publishable standard. Anyone can do it, and this book shows how. But that's not all: I've also included an easy plan for writing a non fiction book painlessly, guides to getting started in writing for many genres, plus links to free downloads for writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice 20 Jun 2005
By Mark
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very brief guide (the book is a small format) but contains a lot of valuable information. More depth would have been nice but there are links all through the book to his website which contains more depth and some quite useful tools.

The view from the publisher's chair is perhaps the most useful thing in this book. The author lists the things that will cause a publisher to accept or quickly reject a book or other work. There are also guides to how to succeed in different areas of book publishing although these are perhaps too brief.

He pulls no punches. The information is useful. It is a very readable book. I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful little book 27 Oct 2010
By Miss M. L. English VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book way before I set pen to paper to start my writing career.

I have now had accepted for publication three books, which are part of a series of 12 which hopefully will also be published.

This is a modest little book, but extremely useful and full of common sense ideas. The writer is now a publisher himself, so he writes from both perspectives.

Stewart covers every conceivable writing style including for Cinema, TV, stage, comedy, radio and children. I don't write fiction but he does cover this in great detail. He also covers all the drawbacks, problems, headaches and general complexities of the whole publishing business, so you understand what you need to know to make the best of your own writing.

My copy is still on the shelf and referred to quite frequently. I would definitely recommend this to anyone contemplating a writing career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it for a budding writer 8 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback
I didn't buy this from Amazon but stumbled across it in my local bookstore so decided to take a gamble on it (having read no reviews on it previously). Im definately glad I did as it gives useful info and inspiration in equal measure. I have read quite a few 'how too...' book on creative writing and this is one of the best. Since reading it I have produced four short stories in a short space of time which I have submitted for competitions. Thats not to say I'll win, but prior to this I have submitted absolutely nothing - so that in intself speaks volumes. Top tip I picked up from this book? Its okay if your first draft is poor, they all are. No ones writes a perfect peice straight away. Just get something written. Very good advice.
