Just in case you get caught out. This IS a picture book, the characters ARE called Hiccup and Stock. But this isn't part of the series (though I told my son it was!). Written in 2000 (and said to have inspired thelater series) it is about a young Viking who doesn't fit in, but there's not a dragon in sight.

We've recently introduced our son to the films and at three he's not old enough for the book series so I was thrilled to discover this in the library. Familiar names and characters and a great little tale about bravery.

Hiccup doesn't want to go to sea, he's easily scared despite his dad Stock telling him Vikings aren't frightened. Yet when he does face his fear he may prove stronger than anyone thinks...

Perfect for my son's age, though some pages are more text-heavy than others. A quirky style of drawing. My boy didn't seem to mind that the book was completely unrelated to the film, was happy to see Hiccup as a small boy "like me!"

A beautiful book! My 5yr old daughter loves the animation and, as she loves reading, I thought that it would be nice to read the original story. It's lovely and I know that she will love it. The story is beautifully written and illustrations are fab. She will love it and I would highly recommend to any Dragon fan

I bought this for my nephew (aged 4) as an introduction to the Hiccup character that my son loved so much. Brilliant illustrations from Cressida Cowell as ever & a simple to follow story for little 'uns. Recommended for the little wannabee vikings in your life!

Not a new children's book by Cressida Cowell 20 Jun. 2014

I have the book "Hiccup, the viking who was sea sick." I thought this was a NEW children's book by Cressida Cowell, but it's the same book with a different title. Since I still love the book I'll give it 3 stars instead of 2. Now I have 2 copies of the same book. Maybe I'll gift one.

My daughter and I listened to the audio cd that came with this book, animatedly narrated by Cressida Cowell herself. It was a fun book to hear and see and I'm sure young readers will love it. Vikings are nearly as cool as dragons.

So cute! 18 May 2014
By Kaitlin Bevis- YA Author - Published on Amazon.com

For those who are wondering, yes this is a reissue of Hiccup: the Viking who was seasick.

My daughter loves the How to Train Your Dragon movie and TV show. We've been reading the first book every night before bed. I've heard of this picture book but it was never available (out of print, I believe). When I saw it in the book store I bought it right away, despite the $15 price tag.

The story is precious, the pictures kind of Karen Katz's crayon style. Only more kid-drawing like. Very cute. features young Hiccup who is already cursed with feelings of inadequacy. He's scared to go to sea and Vikings shouldn't get scared. He gets sea sick on his father's shoes. But when a storm hits, Hi cup realizes that everyone gets sea sick if you're in a bad enough storm.

When the Vikings are too busy throwing up (you never see vomit, just green Vikings) to steer, Hiccup is left to steer the boat. He saves the day and learns that everyone gets scared but they get over it, and that's what makes them brave.

The book comes with a CD which features the author reading the book out loud (and singing the song even!). There are two tracks. One with sounds to tell you when to turn the page and one without. Then as a bonus track you get to hear David Tenant (omg! My doctor) read the first chapter of How to Train Your Dragon book 1 (In a Scottish accent). He narrates all the audio books, btw.

Great read! If your kids love Hiccup, they'll love this.
