Book Description

1 May 2006 1932662138 978-1932662139
In this important resource, 30 real, winning scholarship essays are analyzed, revealing what makes them successful and how they fit the judges' criteria. Essays and interviews are the two components of scholarship competition that often determine the award's recipient, yet most books on scholarships simply provide a directory of awards. This book includes sample interview questions and answers, along with strategies to help students overcome nervousness and be more prepared. Roundtable panels of judges and applicants supply further inside information regarding the winning qualities sought after by award-giving organizations. Advice for finding scholarships--using books, the Internet, personal connections, and sources in the community--is covered. These tips are especially valuable in an era where private education tops more than $100,000, and most of the 15 million college students in the U.S. are in need of financial help.

I purchased this book for WCHS: The Writing Center. It is an excellent resource for students and staff with dependents heading off to college. The examples of essays and responses are particularly helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad 29 Jan 2013

The key is getting your kids to actually do it. We have found that a number of schools and general scholarships have dropped the essays, however most school's Honor Programs require essays and it can be the tipping point for someone who is borderline in either grades or scores. My daughter was admitted into ASU's Honors program and her grades were not stellar but her ACT scores were. Because she didn't entirely meet the basic requirements she felt she wouldn't be given a look but we encouraged her to apply and the ideas she got from this book helped her plan out a thoughtful essay. Because they were willing to take a chance on her based on her essay, she felt motivated to achieve and completed her freshman year with a 3.8.

1.0 out of 5 stars the authors are publishing virtually identical books under different titles and covers 29 Dec 2011

The authors are publishing virtually identical books under different titles. For instance, "How to Write a Winning Scholarship Essay" and "Money-Winning Scholarship Essays and Interviews" are virtually identical (I could find only some minor differences in chapter 4). These two books have completely different covers. Beware: There may be other duplicated titles.

I had no idea how much work it was going to be to try to help my son complete essays for scholarships. It has a lot info.
